Thank you for your email, we are planning to open a store in the Isle of Man at present the planned opening date is mid February. I would like to take this opportunity to answer some of your concerns.

All our stores have to follow very stick guidelines concerning the care of the pets within our care. We have many procedures and policies in place to ensure the pets in our care are cared for to the highest standard. Our stores are overseen by the Pet Care trust and are also subjected to regular checks by the RSPCA and local councils.

Regarding keeping Guinea Pigs and Rabbits together this is something we have done for a long time. These animals are all juveniles and as such can be kept together. We do make it clear that it is not recommended to keep adults together and we would not sell them together if separate housing was not available. We have recently changed our procedure and now all new stores are built with separate housing facilities and our old stores are being updated.

We would never knowingly sell any pet which unhealthy or pregnant. Our rabbits and guinea pigs are sexed by our supplier and then again by our store staff, should a pet be sold in a pregnant condition we always work closely with the customer to resolve this matter appropriately. All pets in store are checked daily and any showing signs of illness are removed from sale and treated as required.

All our rabbits and guinea pigs are bought from reputable breeders and are then quarantined in store for 5 days before being put on the shop floor for sale. This is to ensure that they are eating and drinking properly and are 100% fit and healthy. Our rabbits and guinea pigs are housed in pens that allow room for foraging and normal exercise. In addition they have access to hay daily, shelter in the form of hutches, fresh foods several times a week, a variety of toys are provided, as are chews and other items to gnaw.

If I can be of any further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Regards Debbie

i totally agree with you 100 %

the things they do are still wrong, ive seen babies in there with huge rabbits
theyre palming you/us off with crap as usual, and they also need to start bloody sexing the animals wrong, someone told me last night they got two piggies from there, sposed to be females but one was a male >:(

I think its going to be very interesting when the store is finally opened and i can see for myself whats happening , we at the moment have Jollyes who use to sell birds and fish but stopped now just sell food and equipment etc I was quite happy with that but now PAH is coming and its in front of Jollyes, going to be bun fights lol
they replied as I expected but at least they did reply and know of me now,
I def dont agree with buns and pigs not matter what age in together as this gives customers the wrong idea , despite them telling them its not right , if its not right then why are they doing it thats what I would have asked,

If you've never been into one of these stores I can guarantee that you will be in for a "treat" and wish you the best of luck in your battle with them....

Well done for being pro active and sending a letter.

A while ago I sent a letter to head office and my local store re pigs and rabbits living together and got a similar reply. Lets hope people keep bombading them with letters and emails about their concerns, people power can make a difference.

Hi,

I popped into my PAH here in Aberdeen and was pleasantly surprised to see that they had changed their store around to accommodate two separate runs for piggies (males in one, females in the other). The rabbits were in the original run. The piggy runs were much larger than previously and had some tunnels, hay lofts and igloos for them to hide in. All in all, it was a huge improvement.

Previously they were all lumped together with the rabbits , albeit sexed.

Could be worth printing out the reply and keeping for the future - so it can be taken into any PAH store if there are any issues.

will only be doing battle if i find anything wrong of course, as boysmum has said they've already made changes mentioned in the email from them fingers crossed they keep it up,
now you have the details and what they've said, get emailing, it can't hurt can it especially those of you with problems with them.
jillybean have printed my copy as suggested could be a good idea to all copy it and any problems with anything you will have ammo and the proof against them,

smidge was happily bonded with us, so we said no so instead
we got a hutch for £11.00 that is £35.00!
just to get us out of the door.

Well done, i cant believe you got a reply i know of alot of people who have raised issues with p@h in the past and have just been ignored. I hope they change the store by me they still have piggies in with rabbits at the min. I hope to see changes but i wont count on it!

What a load of BS, "these animals are all juveniles and as such can be kept together" Blah Blah Blah >:( >:( >:(

Good on you Michelle keep them on their toes. I've a friend in the USA who's trying to get a response out of their big chain pet stores and she's had absolutely no response what so ever >:(

Thanks good idea i will, ive had alot of concerns about the pets at my local p@h and not just the piggies my mum went there and saw a parrot that didnt look to happy and was in with cockatiels and asked what breed it was and what size cage would be suitable. They didnt have a clue what it was or what size cage it would need how bad is that >:( so i think the staffs lack of knowlage of all animals that they sell in their stores should also be adressed i will let you know how i get on!

It's great you got a reply, I wasn't even expecting that! I am in the process of writing a letter, I will show it to you here before I send it. I think maybe they are starting to listen if they are having separate enclosures, but they need to be more on the ball with sexing, etc, and how they are supplied.

Padme is currently doing well, and I swear he's getting bigger :D The babies are moving around a lot now, and sometimes you can see as well as feel them! It's incredible! She is being very chilled out but I am pulling my hair out worying about her - I keep expecting to come home to a cage full of babies ;)

Snap! It's amazing isn't it! I had no idea I'd be able to see that. I too am worried. Robyn is fine, eating for England and part of me wants to see it all happening and the other part hopes I'll be presented with however many (hopefully not TOO many!) perfect healthy babies. We can compare notes! I'm going to put another post on about this because I don't want to nick Michellemuffin's topic.

If I may :)

While this chain have a lot to answer for ::) They are probably no better or worse than many of the smaller pet shops in most of our towns...so please keep an eye on these places too ;)
Let us all keep pet shops on their toes! If they want to sell guinea pigs for profit, let us make them all accountable!
