Sorry I haven't been on the forum for ages! I've had exams and and revision etc.
Harvey and Loki are beginning to smell REALLY bad.
I don't really like the thought of bathing them as I'm scared of the pneumonia (as that's what Darwin died of) and the guinea pig 'wiping tissues' don't seem to work very well :\
Is there Anything I can do to stop the smell from abusing the house?
I would really like some advice ASAP as its my 'free' day tomorrow. (From work and revision) x
Thanks a bunch!
Maddey x

Boars do tend to be a bit more *cough* smellier than girls.
Is it possible to just give them a little 'bum bath' as the grease gland can get a bit pongy. This is what I do during the colder months with my long haired boys.
I'd prefer them to be a bit muckier than risk them getting a chill and try to keep their butts tidy, also gives me chance to check their 'man bits' to make sure they have nothing lurking as hay etc. can get stuck which is uncomfortable for them.
I normally pop a warm bowl of water in front of the fire...towels everywhere, dip their botties in, shampoo asap then rinse off. Always try and dry them thoroughly but put their heat pads in on clean bedding, they are indoor piggies so keep the room warm at all times.
In the summer, they have full hair cuts, baths and are showered off.

If you have time to dry then thoroughly then a bath won't harm them. I usually towel dry mine then hair drier then they go in carriers near the radiator for a couple of hours till they are fully dry :)

Thank you so much! That makes a lot of sense as well, I have had guineas for 3 years, but never really noticed the smell till I got an indoor hutch. Thank you for your help!
I'll try and get my piggies dry ASAP! Thank you!

Thank you x I never really thought about a hair dryer (obviously on low heat and low blow) thank you x

I like doing 'bum baths' as guineapigslave suggests. It is less stressful than a full bath buT at the same time cleans the most smelly parts :))

I've sprayed the hutch with some disinfectant and cleaned it with water, and I've also used some light smelling shower gel in their too. Is it best to clean the guineas with shampoo, conditioner or Lightly scented (for delicate skin) shower gell?
Thank you billy! How do you thank people now? The forums changed...

Hair drier on a low setting and i tussle dry the hair with my fingers to get the moisture out. Then i comb them and keep them warm for a few hours in a carrier (only as i have 11 guinea pigs) i used to move the indoor cage nearer the radiator when there was less of them :))

I use a small animal shampoo most pet shops sell it, its not so harsh to their skin and not so strong smelling :) There is a little thanks thing under peoples names on here :)

Have you got piggy shampoo ? A human shampoo is not the best thing although I do know of people who use Johnsons' baby shampoo as it is very mild.
One of my boys scratched himself and was bleeding after a bath as the stuff I used must have irritated his skin so only use Gorgeous Guinea products now :)
Also, pet disinfectants are recommended - lots available that are harmless to animals. F10 is brilliant and lasts ages as it's diluted - think I paid around £11 for a 100ml bottle but it's 1ml per 1000ml of water I think (I just make it up as instructed into a clean spray bottle and keep on top of the kitchen unit for quick spritz, can be used in their dishes etc. too)
Brilliant stuff.
Our boys hate the dryer and plan escape routes the second I pick it up, I've given up with it but it is a sure way of getting them dry fairly quickly :)

I towel wrap mine so i can get at them when hair drying they can't escape me and the hair drier :))

We use Gorgeous guineas shampoo. Our first girls never had a bath in 5 years, however when Miss Moo came to stay with us after a month or so a bath was needed urgently (she has dubious Personal hygiene) Luckily Guineapigslave let us have some of hers and meet her piggies at the same time(a day I will never forget!) GG shampoo is nice smelling and of course safe for piggies, it lasts a long time also. Website is http://www.gorgeousguineas.com/

Aha, you pretended to need shampoo ;) - I remember it well when you stormed my front door wearing those coats with large pockets and doing a piggy head count after you left...mmm :Ayociexp113:

Those large coats eh?! I'll have you know it was very cold outside :)) it wasn't my fault they were designed with big piggie sized pockets....

Thanks for all the comments! X I just washed both of them and are now drying them with a hairdryer... Do any of you have tips?

Hair dryer on a low setting and lots of movement with it so it isn't hot on one part of them for long... I try and towel dry them a little also, however this never goes down well :))

Haha yes Loki had a bit of a nip at my hand while towel drying him. But thank you lots!

Just tussle the hair till its somewhat dry, if they wriggle too much wrap them in a towel and bits of them at a time :)

Thank you :) Loki is being good at the moment but he is nipping at my hand every chance he gets :\ don't think he's happy!

tell him how beautiful he will smell when hes done :))

Nothing lovelier than freshly groomed piggies :) There are some lovely shampoos from GG and one to suit all types of hair - we use Posh n Go for the long haired piggies and keep a Lice n Easy in stock in case of unwelcome visitors but not used it yet thankfully ! :) Chrissy will send small samples for you to try if you email her and recommend what's best for the piggies. I absolutely love her stuff...

Chrissy runs Gorgeous Guineas. Are they all nice and dry now?

I have the lice and easy shampoo and love the smell so I will just keep that as their shampoo, I have only 2 piggies right now and those are boars who are pretty clean and tidy I have bathed them once this year and twice last year I think.

Sooooo sorry I took forever to reply x there all lovely and dry now :) they smell lovely as well!
Thanks for all of your help!!
