I recently joined a few piggy groups on Facebook and most of the stuff is ok but then I see some stuff that drives me nuts! See so many pigs in 100cm cages and tried telling someone the cage was too small (politely), her reply 'my pigs are happy in it' pfft! And I have just read a recipe for a hot meal type thing to 'warm piggies up in winter' and the recipe contains potatoes! I said that I thought potatoes were poisonous to piggies and she told me not to read everything I read on the internet as most of it is rubbish and that this recipe has been used by 1000s of experienced owners! She has also just said that by cooking the potato it cancels out the poison!?!?!

:) That's the nature of Facebook.

Feeding GPs stew is a new one for me however, don't tell me - Tobasco and a smattering of jalapenos to make them feel extra specially warm? XD

I am sorry, I am very anti Facebook.
I will join forums for my animals, but why I would want someone to know absolutely everything about me, I don't know, I am not that interesting.

My page is fully private so I only have people I know on it. I suppose the only reason I joined the page was to give advice to people who perhaps didn't know any better regarding cage size etc :(

Actually potato is fine if cooked, cooking removes Solanine to a safe level, its at its highest in uncooked green potato and in the eyes. Did you know solanine is also found in the following foods yet they are safe to be fed uncooked?
Tomatoes, Peppers, Beets, Blueberry's, Apples, Cherries etc etc......

Also just a thought, isn't critical care cooked? after all it is mixed with hot/warm water (otherwise it never mixes in correctly and you get big lumps in the food).

Personal choice I suppose? But provided it is cooked it wouldn't harm them. It is mostly fed to keep condition on over winter but is also of use to bulk up pigs who are or have been ill.

Ohh is that piggylicious? I read about the potato skins in a breeder's bran mash on there...

Ps it was cooked potato skins and they said never raw. Never done it myself though
