I started a fresh bag of hay this morning and thought it felt heavier than normal. I gave some to the piggies and found a clump of soil but was worried there was a dead animal or something in it even though it didn’t smell. Anyway, after a bit more investigating, I found lots of dried clumps of soil and rocks. It turned out the bag was more soil and rocks than hay and I was worried about the piggies chomping down on a rock or something and I’ve had enough broken teeth with both Edward and Ella this last 18 months than I can deal with so I’ve binned the bag. Hub says I’ve been a bit hasty to throw it away but I’d rather be safe than sorry and I wouldn’t like food full of soil and rocks. Would you have thrown it away or fed it?

The things you find in hay but I’m glad it wasn’t a dead animal at least

I've been finding a lot of mud clumps and tick sticks in the meadow hay I buy mine recently. I tip the hay out of the bag into one of those big builders buckets in the garden and go through it before giving it to the guinea pigs.
The Timothy and Rye hay from a different company has been lovely.

Personally I would have just picked out the bad bits from each clump as I went to give it to them. Random debris is something that comes with a natural product! But then I have not ever had the stress of a guinea pig that has managed to break teeth…

Claire maybe you could complain to the place you bought the hay.The hay and straw company i use ,will usually replace the bag of hay if its not upto there usual standard.

I would but I’ve binned it now and no longer have the receipt but I’ll complain if it happens again. I got it from the range

I've had similar issues before, and I did bin one bag because it had practically as much mud etc. as hay.
I've never had any issues with the Pets at Home hay funnily enough.

I don't blame you tbh for throwing it away. Better to be safe than sorry; although I agree, if you contact the company maybe they can reimburse you or send you another bag.

I found a dead mouse once in a bag of hay 🤢it went straight in the bin.Luckily it wasn't a big bag.Sorry you've found rocks and soil in yours.

Ugh! Once I found a giant mummified grasshopper in mine... that was kind of a shock! I don't know where the hay was grown, that grasshopper was HUGE!

I do not buy bagged or pet shop hay. I get mine from haybox but there’s been a couple of times we haven’t timed our order right and have needed to buy pet shop hay whilst we wait on the order. And I once found a very flat dead mouse, one time a huuuuge dead grasshopper and another time lots of mud and rocks too! The bags all gone thrown after that I was so worried the mouse could have been poisoned !
