Here's the latest on the two wayward capybaras in a Toronto park... still on the lam, but at least one has been spotted. Hopefully they catch the little guys before anything happens to them!

Incidentally, the last line mentions that Toronto has a bylaw prohibiting domestic rodents above 1500 g... a couple of my pigs have likely been flirting with that limit! LOL!

What a sneaky little jumping in the water! And wow! Didn't know about that law either! Ive got growing boars on my hands wonder how big they'll get...

Poor things probably miss the diet at the zoo though! This is so fun that they just keep taking themselves out of recapture-what elusive creatures!

Well, we officially had a sighting of at least one of the missing capybaras today... looking good, grazing and swimming in the pond. Hopefully someone will be able to safely recapture her! They're in a park area in a major urban environment, I keep worrying that they will wander off the green belt and be hit by one of the major streets surrounding! They've actually got one sighted napping in the brush on live TV now and are trying to find out the best way to approach it without frightening it out of sight again.

Pleased she is doing well. Need to capture of photo of her with chooken legs out relaxing. Lets hope they can bring her home safely soon

Surely domestic rabbits are over 1500g ?
Are rabbits technically rodents? I thought they were a different class. I can vouch that they're sold in Toronto, I think that the law is purely to rule out people trying to own something like, say, a beaver or a capybara in the city. I'm positive no one is actually checking the weight of domestic rodents to make sure they pass! There are a lot of bylaws here about what animals can be owned and it varies by municipality, which probably leads to lots of 'illegal animals.' For instance, my municipality does not allow tarantulas or aquatic turtles, but this just means that stores do not sell them within the municipality. However, I could just drive ten minutes to the next town over and buy one there and bring one home! I just found it amusing that the cut-off was so low. Clearly whoever wrote the bylaw has never seen a big guinea pig! LOL!

Just looked it up for curiosity and rabbits are now considered lagormorphs (moved from the order of rodentia in 1912.) I read that some arguments have been made that guinea pigs and their close relatives ought to moved into their own family tree as well, owing to differences from more typical rodents (precocious births, some differences in dentition and skeletal structure), but for now the majority of scientists believe they should stay in the rodent genus.

Learn something new everyday! But I suspect that they will forever be rodents to most people! A pet beaver? I know some people might be that stupid, but can someone really be that stupid?!
