Currently, along the south east (Australia), there is a really strong wind. My piggies live outside and every night I find it hard to sleep listening to it. Anyway, earlier on today, I was inside and I noticed from the window that the big umbrella that was behind the hutch tipped over... next I saw the hutch had gone with it. Then across the lawn near the edge of thick bushland, Milo and near the gate, Leo. I've gone into semi-shock because it was my nightmares coming true. I run, grab Milo and then bolt for Leo however Leo dodges me and runs to the other end. I run over to the other end then he dodges me again. On the way back to the previous end I dive and JUST managed to grab him. By now, I was in tears, I could have lost them forever. Luckily I saw them when I did, the hutch is slightly damaged but fixable. Milo escaped from my cousin's arms the day I got him and ran into the bush; also, a lucky grab. Leo did it too once.
A note to everyone, don't leave any large objects behind the hutch/run especially when windy.
How am I going to sleep tonight!

Oh wow! That must have been terrifying for you! I often have nightmares too but luckily none have come true. I'm so sorry that happened but well done for grabbing your two boys back and getting them safe.

I'm terrified to keep mine outside for a lot of reasons and I feel much more peace when I know mine are next to my room. My bed is against their wall so I can hear everything.

Great idea, am looking at indoor cages on ebay now, weather changes every 2 days here!
:)

Yeah I'm sure you will feel a lot more peace of mind especially after this happened. I'm so glad you were able to get them both.

Oh yea, its quite bad in Australia at the moment isn't it?

Aww, I'm glad they're okay!

I would be in a constant state of worry if my guinea pigs were outside. Heat stroke, rain, wind, snakes, goannas, cats... the list of dangers goes on and on.

I really hope you are able to move them in soon! You can buy a big sheet of corflute from any sign shop for around $20-$30. Just score the sides so that they are quite high, tape it together, and there you have it - an indoor cage for under $50! Your piggies will never run off again :)

Wow, might not be allowed but that's awesome!

Oh how awful! I thought you were going to tell us this was just a bad dream. I'm so relieved to hear that your piggies are OK

So glad they are safe, are you keeping them inside for now?

May not be able to for many reasons, but will try my hardest; I'm going to be out tomorrow and don't know how to deal with the thought that they're outside so I'm thinking of putting them on my deck (I don't know what in), the deck has electric blinds that can go down to the grown so it's like another room but with fresh air. Do you have any suggestions as to what to house them in?
Thanks

I cant really imagine what your "deck" is but it does sound like you need to get them in some secure shelter. We had one awful storm here in the UK (Nottingham) on Saturday which blew over my empty outdoor hutches, so I'm very glad my piggies are inside, even though its very inconvieniant in some ways! On the radio this morning they were saying it was a tornado!

PiggyLove - your set up is gorgeous! I love that "piggiepigpigs" banner! So sweet. I have Cath Kidston style bunting round one of my indoor cages :) I dont have a lovely home made set up like you though. Just Ferplast for the girls and a cobbled together arrangement for the boys who need more room than a Ferplast can give....

Oh how scary! What luck your little ones are safe. That was a terrible shock for you.

Yes! We are having some very unusual weather with what we think of in the UK as very strong storms though I imagine that they are nothing to what you are used to in America and Australia!
But this is the third time this winter that the hutches have rather drammatically blown across the patio, so we are looking at relocating the hutches into the shed or perhaps concreting the hutches to the ground!

What a scare! Any chance of fixing the hutch to the house wall?

Crumbs i would have been hysterical by that stage, can't imagine my girls disappearing into the distance off the lawn.

you can get those oven kits that attach ovens to the wall, basically a chain with a loop & fixing to secure it,
i got two for my fishtank stand so that it couldn't topple, think it was only about £5 each if that.
Places like Toolstation & Screwfix in the uk used to have them, if not try electrical/hardware shops &ask for the chain that fluorescent lights are suspended from, a good heavy duty screw fixing &raw plugs fitted properly are all thats needed.

I'm lucky my girls have been indoors this &last year during the winter months, as Ellie had URI's &needed to be kept warm, theyre usually in the shed in their hutch. so our storms over here havent been a problem for them.
xx

Probably not, but I'm looking at buying a C&C cage for them because I'm thinking of getting 2 more sometime down the track.

thank god they are ok i noticed that my hutches outside are moving slightly with the wind, i do not have pets in them they are for my boarders, weird thing is all my boarders are indoor. that would be very scary for anyone, at least you got them. x

Am trying to save up for a c&c cage but they're about $150 each (for the larger ones).
