Cuy is generally the name for larger guinea pigs bred for food in South America that have begun to infiltrate the pet trade in some places, almost by accident. My understanding is that they tend to be more skittish and much larger (up to five pounds) than the typical guinea pig sold as a pet. I've never seen one live, but have seen video of some, and man are those huge guinea pigs!

I've seen several at my local guinea pig rescues. It is now common here in California, they are being sold in chain pet stores unknowingly to potential owners what they really are. My rescue has a Cuy sanctuary but can not take more in because of space. She tries to adopt Cuys out to experience owners or Cuys that are less wild/skittish.
