Mum is being a b*tch again... she is forcing me to put the pigs outside :'(

My bedroom smells really bad of guineas but no matter how clean I keep them it still smells...

We have 2 cages outside, both 2 storey but both arent very secure and I know one of the babies will find its way out :(

The pigs are all I have... I'm so bored and lonley without them... and its so cold at night... reaching a minimum of about 5-10 degrees celcius...

They will freeze their butts off...

Its not fair... I promised they would go ouside when we move, and no sooner... but big suprise... thats not good enough!

How can I convince her to let them stay inside?

tell her its too cold in the night for babys yet, make sure you clean them every day and try some good fresh smelling disenfectant its worth a try

I use Glen20... its hospital grade disinfectant and works but doesnt completley get rid of the smell :-\

Thanks Michelle :)

I dont think guineas really do smell :o ?

Maybe I'm used to it ;D

cant you keep a window open and buy some air freshener? ? :-\

I open my window in the day time but its too cold at night :-\
I dont really notice the smell either... but mum thinks its fowl ;D

Ive re-arranged my room and sprayed the smelly stuff in there now so hopefully I can keep it even cleaner...

Thanks guys :)

Ah no, i'm sorry BW that's a real bummer :'(
Explain to her how little mini's will surely freeze, plead with her, promise to do extra around the house or something.
Good luck i know how much you love them all and wouldn't want anything to happen to them as you're a great piggie mum :smitten: :smitten:

Aww thanks Glynis :)

I think now because I have cleaned everyone and made an effort to make sure they dont make such a mess, she has changed her mind... hopefully :)

They don't smell!

I live in a studio flat with three cages = 4 pigs, they all get covered over at night for "bedtime", but they definately don't smell, admittedly I clean them all out twice a day morning and evening, but its only a matter of rolling up the newpaper and in the evening I spray round with disenfectant to clean the cage. I hoover twice a week and when I've hoovered I spray P@H "odour remover" in all their favourite places - corners and under my bed, the window is always open but theres no smell!

Yer... I clean mine out every 2 days or so... but because the boys are so messy, and the girls arent much better, they smell... its not real strong but its there...

I clean my two boys out everyday. Full wipe down and spray, but i still find that boys do smell.

What kind of cages do they have? Is it possible for you to use fleece?

Also I have heard carefresh is great for keeping odors at bay. x

Mine have a C+C cage... I tried Fleece... but didnt like it that much... I just use news paper now which seems to be the best bedding Ive used...

it might be worth cleaning them out daily with newspaper. It smells quite a bit even within a day, or so I have found. it might be worth trying a loose bedding, or rolling up the newspaper and refreshing it if you have a continueous supply.

I know! I also live in a studio flat with 2 sows in 1 massive C&C cage, fleece lined... it never ever smells like piggers. Cooking or socks maybe, but not pig grime. I use Johnson's small animal disinfectant spray which smells nice and is quite cheap.
What do you bed them on?

;D yep... everyone that goes into my room complains about the smell... since I posted this its gotten alot better though... ive been spraying a bit of 'the disinfectant spray everyday and having the window open... theyre due for a clean again today ::) lol

I have mine in the kitchen and they do smell so not too hygenic, I know. I have the boys in a bedroom but can have the window locked open slightly so makes it better but I can't have the kitchen window open. I do clean mine out regularly but would go a bit careful about using too much disinfectant and especially air fresheners. The smell of these to the guineas will be much stronger and to be honest I think could even be harmful. I can remember years ago when I used to have hamsters, being told that when you clean out, you should always put a bit of their soiled bedding back so it still smells of them. I don't do this with the guineas but then I'm not fanatical about cleaning out every day. I think a balance needs to be struck between hygene but also not stripping out their natural smell.

guinea pigs are ment to live outside.Ask your mum if you can put the babies on the landing or downstaris in the kitchen for a month or so?

Mine are meant to go outside aswell but because of the rain we haven'tgotten the hutch built so i've managed to keep them inside longer :)

guinea pigs aren't ment to live outside, they are becoming popular house pets and i think it's great :)

of course piggies are meant to live outside they are animals!

Dont take that comment the wrong way, I purely mean that if we as humans didnt exist, piggies would be roaming free across the lands in burrows. They wouldnt have the luxuries us slaves give them. I worry about my girls at winter but thats because piggies arent native to the UK so winter can be nasty for them...

At the moment if its dry my 4 are out in the run from about 8 am til 9pm and they LOVE it... you can almost see dissapointment on them when i put them back in the cage for the night!

We can't have piggies outside at our place cause of foxes :tickedoff: :tickedoff: :tickedoff: :tickedoff:
So Duke is an indoor 5 star accommodation piggie :smitten:

Could you compromise and just keep the babies indoors until they're bigger? If you put some insulation around your hutches, old carpet and a tarpaulin sheet or something, would it be ok for the others to go outside then? Just thought it may give you a bargaining tool with your Mom :-\ ::)

yes but that isn't domesticated guinea pigs :) wild ones are differant to domesticated, they are alot more hardya dn can handle the lements easier

I think there are a few problems with keeping guinea pigs outside. For a start, they are not wild animals, they are domseticated. Another problem is they're not native. And finally they don't live the same outside as pets as they would in the wild - e.g. live in huge herds and have deep, warm burrows to go to. I know lots of people keep their gp's outside but I just think its too risky. And don't forget that wild piggies have a much shorter lifespan, because of problems like predators and adverse weather conditions.

Maybe your mum would change her mind if you could get rid of the smell. You could try using puppy pads on the bottom of the cage with another bedding on top. These should soak up any wee and stop the smell escaping. I think if you tried a few types of bedding you should be able to find one that works for you. Good luck!

Especially if cleaned out so often, they really shouldnt smell. Guinea pig urine generally doesnt smell very strong, if it does, it usually means something isnt quite right. If they have very strong urine, are they drinking enough? If they dont like using the bottle, try water bowls instead and see if they take better to them. Feed more cucumber, which has plenty of fluid.
Strong smelling urine could also be a sign of urine infection, might be worth seeing a vet about it?

Generally, tell your mum you wouldnt mind so much putting the piggies out, but you have to consider the babies - they are small enough to get out of the hutch still, and couldnt cope with the temperatures well. Tell her that you will have to wait until they are a bit bigger, as it isnt fair on them to put them outside just yet.

To be honest, and no offence at all to your mum baby-wilson, but if she's not really an animal lover, the smell of animals bothers people more. I'm sure your mum loves you having the guineas but she probably doesn't want her house smelling of them. Like Abnoba says, they shouldn't smell if cleaned out every 2 days, but maybe your mum doesn't like the smell of the hay and bedding etc eitherl? I would concentrate on airing the room well, plenty of fresh air but not draughty. It would also get them used to a cooler atmosphere if they do go outside.

I know my house smells of dog and guinea and I'd rather it didn't, but it doesn't bother me too much. I know it must smell to other people.

B-W any updates? Are they having to go outside or is your mum happy with them in the house? My piggies are outside in their big hutch for the summer and are fine out there, however I have no idea what it's like over there at this time of the year! (my pigs are coming back in for the winter).
