as a first time guinea pig mummy to two girls, i can't believe the amount they poo!
i was expecting little droppings every now and again like you get from hamsters ;D, how do you keep on top of it all?
do you scopp out every morning?

Yes they do make a lot of poo and pee. I have eight piggies so they have to be cleaned out 3 times a week. Its easy because the wet newspapers (which are upwards of 3 whole papers thick) is just lifted up and put straight into the bin. I use rubber gloves i hasten to add. I then lightly spray the area with a mild disinfectant and let it dry for a couple of minutes. A strong pine smelling cage/hutch is not good for piggy noses and their all important sense of smell can be affected let alone possible harm to their sensitive lungs.

I don`t think i would like a pine smell in my house all day long.

I use hay on top of thick newspapers. Their pee is soaked up by the paper and their droppings drop through the hay to the paper. Sometimes i use a vacuum cleaner but if you try it make sure the piggies are well away or they could end up inside.

Hay will easily clog up the vacuum (to my cost) so only use it to pick up poo pellets. :smitten:

I have 27 piggies and i dont think mine poo alot but thats maybe me cause i clean mine out every other day though ;D ;D

I do a spot clean every morning and take out the wet patches and replace with new bedding. I do a complete cage clean twice a week.x

I had two girls Smudge and Fudge who are at the bridge now......I thought they poo'd a lot...but I now have Winston.....he poos even MORE! ;D and he's a lone boar! I try my best to litter train him, at least it gets him to try and poo in the one spot......it makes it a little easier to clean, although, sometimes (more often than not!) he forgets ::)

isent the ink in newspaper poisonus to piggies ?

Most newspapers are made with vegetable ink, just don't use the Shiny smooth paper that adds are put on. But like national and local papers use vegetable ink so its safe

re newspaper ink thanks for info had been using it to line cages but noticed piggies sometimes nibbled the edges so stopped using it as thought it was poisonus
