Hi all, we've 2 female long haired piggies, one has the thickest hair I've ever seen, the other has always had thin hair which is now thinning pretty much all over. She is 3 1/2, vet said 2 months ago she may have cancer of ovaries (other vet a few months earlier said she was fit & healthy on check up) she is eating normal, playing normal and weight is the same. She seems perfectly OK apart from having thinning hair and what looks like appealicha. Have used anti parasite drops incase was this. The other one is fine and very thick hair. Any ideas or Anything I can do? Thanks 👍

Hi!

Could you please correct what you have meant with 'appealicha' and what kind of antiparasite have you been using? It may help us with working out what could be going on. It would also help if you could upload a picture via the attach files button below your next post.

Right now, I have only your own speculations to go by. Your guess is as good as mine as things stand due to lack of more tangible information.

Hi!

Thank you for the pictures and text corrections.

Please be aware that beaphar is a low dosed preventative product (it has taken us some digging around to find the actual concentration but he have); it cannot cure an acute case of parasites - only temporarily suppress it. The hair loss pattern is not usual for (invisible) mange or hay mites and lice are pale things crawling on the body that you could not miss if that amount of hair loss was caused by them.
New piggy problems: URI - ringworm - skin parasites

The hair loss pattern is not typical for ovarian cysts, which is on the sides and belly but not on the back and shoulders.
Sows: Behaviour and female health problems (including ovarian cysts)

Has your vet considered whether there could be an issue with the nutrition? This can also be caused by an underlying health issue and not just by the wrong diet. I would strongly recommend to see an exotics vets for another examination. This kind of hair loss is not normal and needs to be checked through by vet experienced with guinea pigs.
