Hi all when i got dale and buster i did notice that Dale had lots of white bits on him which i was guessing was fleas and dry skin normal for the living conditions they did have so i bought some of the flea drop stuff from wilko for small animals also i done all four of them now dale is the grumpy one out of all now i would like to know two things
1 does he need a vet? And or bath
2 will they all need treating

If so is there anything I can do at home to help,?
Are pets at home fit to deal with this if needed x

Hi there,

To be able to identify the cause of the skin debris, a cavy vet visit will advise you. It could well be mites and in which case the vet will likely prescribe Invermicin, an injection is the first course. I don't recommend any general shop bought treatment without knowing what infestation you actually have and to be honest, they tend to be a very mild treatment in any case. I regularly treat my lot with Xeno450 which you can get from your vet or buy online, however you have to dose accurately for the weight of your guinea pig too.

At this point, do not bath your guinea pigs. I only bathe mine if they need it and I only use Gorgeous Guineas shampoo as they don't contain any chemicals and are all natural.

Don't bother with P@H vets, go to a cavy savy vet who'll be able to diagnose correctly. Could be mites or lice. to get a good vet, use the vet locator at the top of the forum.

Ok fair enough only thing i think its done is not worked to be hounest
The bug i found had lots of legs and was yellow

And from the map says nearest is Northampton not sure if this is rite i live in Milton Keynes

It's probably the Cat & Rabbit Clinic in Northampton which is run by Simon Maddox, he's a real cavy vet whose very knowledgeable indeed, if you can I would get there, it makes a difference going to a good vet.

Oh, the bug doesn't sound nice at all. Poor wee things.

I meant to add, it does sound like lice. When going to the vet, I would take all your piggies are they are likely to be all infected. Also don't forget to mention the treatment you gave and take the box with you. Whatever you do, don't treat your piggies for fleas or buy general shop bought stuff, as you don't know what's actually inside it.

the sooner the better to a vets, the better, lice can be painful for your pigs.

Sorry 1 more question how much if you know will it be each roughly

It is going to be one consultation fee, plus treatment for all piggies in your house to prevent transmission between guinea pigs. You always need to treat all guinea pigs within contact for skin parasites and fungal infections. It pays to do it properly and to treat with good quality products rather than treating on spec with cheap low dosed broad spectrum pet shop products that do not work.

The vets we are recommending are vets that are the best in their general area for treating guinea pigs, especially when it comes to operating or more species specific health issues that many general vets are not necessarily conversant with.

If you prefer to see a local vet for something as obvious and straight forward as guinea pig lice (by the sound of it), you can see any small animal vet.
As a public forum, we are not qualified and legally not allowed to diagnose just from a member's description, but we can help you to see the right vet and ask the right questions so you get the best possible treatment out of your vet visit, especially for those of our members from all over the world that have not got good vet access or any piggy savvy vets within reach. We can also advise you on how you can best support your guinea pigs with your own home support care during an illness or operation recovery in addition to medical vet care.

Please do not bathe for at least 48 hours after any skin application to make sure that it all gets absorbed and goes to work in the skin properly and is not just washed away. It is normal for mange mites to get worse during that time as the mites react to poison of the ivermectin, but you should see an improvement afterwards.

A full course takes three applications to get on top of all emerging mites and prevent a comeback, so your piggies will require another two vet trips at the product specific interval (usually around 10-14 days). You will notice a slow increase of scratching as the first round is wearing off, but any symptoms should disappear completely about 2 days after the second application. The third round in there to make sure that all stragglers have been caught. ;)

Ahh thank you vet said give it 3mths and i not bathed them yet so they need 2 more doses of the treatment can i do that myself if i go by weight of each or does vet have to do it

You can do it yourself if you use the same product and with consent of your vet.
