i was feeding him recovery all yesterday and night and he is trying to eat on his own but when he trys he opens his mouth really wide as if he cant get it down,he seemed in pain aswell last night with his mouth area, ive checked his frount teeth which seem fine but I'm wondering if its his back teeth?I'm going the vets today at 12 to get him checked out this would explain the weight loss.has when his temp was checked on friday if was normal?hoping it is something like this that can be fixed fingers crossed..

AHH Babe I hope so. Is he still walking around and stuff?

Is it just the weight loss?

Well that's good. When I had a guinea with septacemia (who died) they became unable to walk at all.

I have my fingers and toes firmly crossed for Ralphie. Which vet are you taking him to today?

Good luck getting his teeth examined, hope it might shed some light on some of Ralphie's problems.

One product to get hold of as well is Daktarin Oral Gel, it will soothe any soreness in the mouth whether or not it is dental. Make sure his mouth is rinsed with water at the end of every feeding too.

Fingers crossed for some good news.

Hope you get to the bottom of the problem and all goes well at the vets! Fingers crossed for a swift recovery and keep us updated on the little man!

Best of luck for getting to the bottom of Ralphie's problems!

just got home and the vet said it seems because of all the antibiotics he has been on its affected his gutt which seems to be stopping working so he has had a injection and i have to give him some medication 3 times a day then go back tuesday he is on metoclopramide dont who what this does think its to get his gutt workingmallethead

Metaclopromide is a motility drug, so yes it should help get his system moving along again. I hope it works! x

Me too. Poor Ralphie has been through it so much hasn't he.

I guess you are still syringing him at the moment Claire. I hope he starts to eat on his own very soon.

Hang in there Ralphie we are all rooting for you!

he has being eating grass but at first with great difficulty still think its his back teeth I'm convinced ,,but the vet sez he needs a GA to get a better look and he would need a GA if they did any work on them is this true has i thought they could do it with out a GA..

They can do it witout a GA (or a vet experienced properly in guineas can). Did you manage to get the daktarin for his mouth? Daktarin oral gel I think Laura said it was called.

Claire could you see a different vet who would be able to examine his teeth without a GA. Maybe ring round a few?

i have some daktarin in has my baby had it when he had thrush so now using this,,this is the second vet ive gone to now not one seems to know much about guineas its so maddeninggrrrrgrrrrgoing ring around 2moz xx

could you try ringing the cct and finding out where your nearest rodentologist is?

I agree with Eleanor, I think it may be worth asking Vedra is there are any local rodentologists near to you. Keeping my fingers crossed he starts improving.

What dose are you giving of the Daktarin?

ETA: Just read your latest post, glad there is someone fairly near you.

I tend to give 0.5ml twice a day for 5 days.
As the saying goes, it soothes the sore areas, in addition to it's anti-fungal properties.

the daktarin is a gel i have what dose should i give i put some one a cotton bud and rubbed it in his mouth but I'm so sure its his back teeth he has all these signshttp://www.guinealynx.info/malocclusion.html

I'm going order a vet to look at his back teeth 2moz I'm getting so pxxxed of now with no one listening to me I'm going to loose me baby ralphie,
<<<<<< this would explain the weight loss and the gagging when he trys to eat and the way he drops his bottom jaw when I'm sringe feeding him and putting gabbage into his mouth i have to push it passed his checks before he cant eat it and you know what ive been hand feeding him since yesterday solid and he was 917g tonight he is 933g so its got to be..what are spurrs it sez about these on one of the sites

If his mouth is sore it might also be worth asking for injected metacam, it is a painkiller as well as an anti- inflammatory, I wouldn't use oral if he isn't eating.
If the vet thinks it is caused by antibiotics have you been given a probiotic- I prefer fibreplex as it also has added fibre.
Metochloprimide can be injected up to every 8 hours to help get the gut moving
If his mouth is sore you could try baby food, I use Ella's kitchen organic food with poorly buns- for them either apple and banana or parsnip, carrot and apple- the latter may be better for a pig, although I always feel it is better they eat something rather than nothing at all.

Good luck hope he starts eating soon.

Me too. I hope you can get to a rodent specialist Claire who doesn't waste your time or money.

Ralphie is a bit of a fighter isn't he. Good for him!

Ralphie's struggles are really getting to me - I have to keep checking for updates (so keep them coming).

Pleased he's put on weight - you're doing right by him.

"If his mouth is sore it might also be worth asking for injected metacam, it is a painkiller as well as an anti- inflammatory, I wouldn't use oral if he isn't eating"

If he is not eating, because of a sore mouth, then Daktarin Oral Gel is the very thing that he needs, until any possible oral/dental problem is resolved.
Calpol liquid, dose 0.2ml, is a useful general painkiller which could be given in conjunction with the Daktarin.

It must be late at night. I thought at first he was a two coloured pig, short white at the front and long blonde at the back, then I realised it was his teddy bear!!
