I have really been having a hard time deciding on what bedding to use for my piggies. I started with carefresh which turned out to be to expensive, then tried fleece which smelled very quickly and now am using aspen shavings under the carefresh. The aspen under the carefresh seems to be ok but digging out poops everyday and scooping out wee spots is time consuming. Also not to mention the cage looks messy as they start mixing together and also after calculating I spent 80 for one month of bedding. I was thinking maybe i could just change out the fleece every day especially since the cage I have is not that big. I have 2 blankets already so I would need 5 more and joannes fabric store is having a huge sale black Friday. I think I will do a trial run with the 2 fleeces I have now. I hope this works cause I really do like the look of the fleece so much better. Also does anyone know which is better anti-pill or blizzard fleece? I bought anti-pill last time and one of them took forever to wick. Last question can I use just towels under the fleece or should I put some other absorbent layer under it as well? Thanks in advance for the advice!

We changed to fleece over a year ago and find it really easy to use although our piggies still insist on dragging hay all over it - but hey piggies do what piggies do!

We use a base layer of a product which is called bedxcel which is a recycled cardboard flake material and then a towel on top of this and the final layer of fleece. We have to spot clean regularly and do a full cage clean usually every five days. During the cage clean we only remove any of the wet bedxcel and replace with fresh, clean towel and fleece. You soon get to know which part of their cage they use most frequently. Hope this helps.

Good luck. X
I personally use a newspaper under layer, then towels, then put the fleece on, so yes, towels are fine to use. Fleece is the best option for the guineas, but you do have to wash it, and don't forget you have to spot clean each day too. You must wash the fleece 3 times, (NO fabric softener, EVER), I use anti-pill, anti-pill is said to be the best fleece to use. You cannot just add the fleece and job done, it is a must that you wash it at least 3 times, or the wicking won't work at all, and the object of fleece is pointless.

You may like to try vetbed. I have a layer of towels then vet bed on top. I change it every three days and remove poops three times a day.

I have a ground sheet then puppy pads then fleece but have towels and fleece where their beds are and they get changed every day but the main fleece gets changed every 7 days and any soiled puppy pads.I have litter trays so most wees in there.Works really well for me

Easy to wash fleece too .I put the dirty ones in an old pillow case and secure the top with an old hair scrunchie then throw it in the washing machine. The little bits of hay that get stuck to the fleece don't clog up the machine that way.

Ive just moved over to fleece and in the first week or so I was like I dont think is going to work as it started to smell pretty quickly, so rather than changing the whole fleece I worked out where they go to the toilet most, eg. Corners and around their food bowl and hay rack and made some small fleece pads, its much easier to change and wash them everyday rather than a whole cage liner :)
Just an idea :)

Thank you for all of your suggestions.
@hannah8t9 How do you make fleece pads? That sounds like a great idea because I know where there favorite spots are already.
