I have 4 lovely ladies and one boar. Currently, they all live in the same hutch but Pete(boar) has a "fenced off" part. His mother came to me pregnant so he was not planned. I was wondering what the risks are and what would happen. Would Pete still try to mate with the girls and harass them? I would like to know other peoples stories about spaying their boars. Also the cost. How much would it cost from a really good vet? Is there anything else I need to know? Thanks in advance and will post more questions if they arise.

If they're all living in the same hutch but he has a fenced off area is the hutch big enough for five guinea pigs?
How old is he?

The hutch is a huge homemade two storey thing. It is plenty big enough for five. Pete is now about 1 and a half year old.

I had one of my boys neutered recently. I used the vet that had the most experience in neuterings and I asked about the anaesthetic they used, post op care etc. Cyrus did develop an abscess three weeks post op, but is fine now and lives with my girls. I waited almost two months before putting him in with the girls... It is a big decision to make, however for me I had to weigh up the risk of an op against my boy living as a single boar and his long term happiness.....Just make sure you do your homework with your vets and find one who has experience with neutering piggies. Best of luck and let us know what you decide......

I think if I knew and trusted the vet I would consider. Harry was a rescue pig that had been done by a vet I don't know and failed to pick up the issue I've had. Harry came home on sawdust after complications with hay in his cage so I think had he had been paid more attention I'm not sure I'd have had the results I did. But then again the rescue I got him from was extremely oer crowded and I don't blame them.
I guess I would consider but with much hesitation, my boy Theo has always had piggies around but always enemies tthrough a cage divide, I'd love to see him happy, but I also couldn't bear him suffering like Harry. Harry still isn't right even yet. Still not gained all his weight nor is eating many pellets, his weight is stable though and this is now 4 months or more post op.
Its a hard call. I'm certainly not experienced in neutering and I'd be fearful that I'd be going in blind in terms of after care.
Is little pig pig still doing well?

I have had lots and lots of boys neutered here as part of the rescue and only ever had one absess and yes I would and probably will get other males neutered.

I have found that they live exceptionally happy lives with female groups and provided you have a great vet and exceptional hygiene standards for a few weeks afterwards it should be fine.

Our cost is approx £45 each time.

The natural life of a male guinea pig would be to live with a group of girls so I see my groups as living out their lives in a very fulfilled and natural way.

How sad! He should have been on towels changed daily for weeks after his op and hay up out of his way. What a shame the rescue didn't know what to do right.

I know since his recent op to remove huge absess he's been kept on towels and changed daily and the ones under the igloo twice. He's healed remarkably well and the absess is gone.
You've given me lots of food for though about doing theo now.

And sone more question out of curiously, does spaying have an effect of scent glands? Will he not stink as much? What is the average success rate? Thanks everyone for your answers so far

Would you neuter again Angela?

Mmmmm, I dont know if I could go through it again...I was not working at the time so could give Cyrus 24 hour care. I was just starting to relax when he developed the abscess. When I see cyrus with his girls, I now think it was worth it, but could I do it again? I suppose it would just depend on whether I had a single boy....I would always try bonding with another piggie first and only if that failed would consider neutering.....

My neutered boys have less ming on their grease glands than guests we have had who are entire.

However they still get stinky willies, Dodge's has to be cleaned quite often as he is super rampant!
