I have been thinking of adding a boar to the family lately. I have 3 girls leaving together and I keep thinking how nice it would be to have a proper little herd. Obviously he would have to be castrated (I would go for a rescue who's already been done).

Do you think it's a good idea?
Do any of you have experience in adding a boar to a group of girls? It's probably not an option taking all of them to a rescue for introductions so I am wondering what are the chances they will not get on?

Well I had 3 girls living happily together and then saw digby and had to have him so he was neutered and introduced slowly and at first it was a bit iffy as amber and tilly are very bossy but they all adore him now and I have added another 2 girls and all is well he loves his wives.
The only thing I would say is if you are adding another remember that if one gets a fungal or lice probelm then all the others may have to be treated so the expense goes up. I cant really say any more as my intros went fine and they are happy O0

I have 8 girls living very happily with a neutered boar aswell as a group of 3 girls living with a neutered boar 8) As long as you have the space and time for another pig theres no reason it wont work out O0

Thanks Dazie. How did you introduce them? Had they met before you brought him home?
The extra expense is not a problem really. I will also have to make the C&C bigger. At the moment they are in a 4x2 and I think I will make that a 4x3 so they should have enough space.

They never met him until I brought him home, I wanted him so if it didnt work out then I would have found a lady for him.

I introduced them in the run I put Digby in first then one girl at a time and all went well they kinda just sniffed each other and digby thought he was still complete lol but he soon realised he wasnt,he still has a go bless him ::) then the next intro I cleaned the girls out and put Digby in their cage on his own so he could check it out and get comfy and then I popped the girls back in one by one and they were fine. I was nervous about leaving him in there but the next day he was fine and there was no looking back :) He is a very laid back piggy and nothing really bothers him so he settled in really well.

I am thinking of maybe getting an older boar. I know that they are harder to re-home so it makes me feel like I am doing some good. Also Fluffy is 5 1/2 so I am hoping that if the boar is older he might not feel so sexy ;). I don't think Fluffy would like the attention ;D

Digby is a older boar I think this is why he is so laid back as he hasnt got the energy lol

Try and inroduce the sows to the boar first so they can pick their favourite if needbe :) It may all go fine but often the balance is upset and needs to be re established. I've had trios here that have come to pick a boar :)

ooooo interesting question O0 I have just adpoted a 18 month neutered boar from our local rescue. He had been there for a while and was living alone and was very lonely :'( We picked him up yesterday evening and have renamed him Santa, he name was Duey. He's been in seperate cage next to the girls over night and today, he can see them through the bars and vice versa. Were hopefully going to bond him with the girls tomorrow, if all goes ok ;D

Bonding vibes everyone please ;D
