Junior Guinea Pig
My wonderful little angel Scuzzy passed in October and the house has been so empty. Normally my local shelter gets in just cats and dogs (I'm in a very small town), but these boys have shown up: http://www.petfinder.com/petdetail/25386931
I absolutely loved having a guinea pig. I knew from reading about them online I could care for one no problem, but Scuzzy was even better than the information led me to believe. Guinea pigs bond with you just as well as a cat or dog does and he genuinely enjoyed my company as much as I enjoyed his.
The thing is, he was an old geezer when I got him and had been very neglected. He hated floor time and would actually wet himself and cry until I picked him up. Thankfully he was active enough in his cage, so exercise wasn't an issue, but I know these little piggies will be completely different and they'll want to run around an explore. Having two will also be a totally new experience. I heavily debated about getting Scuzzy a friend but I think I made the right call about keeping him by himself since it was such a huge change coming into my home, having a large cage, being well fed, and finally getting some attention. I want these piggies to have fun and play, but also like some cuddle time.
I'm also wondering when I need to start trimming their nails (I thought I read after a year old, but does it ever vary?), checking for impaction, if young piggies like this are OK with regular guinea pig food, and if maybe I should start them in a smaller cage and move them to a proper sized one when they're bigger.
I would really love to hear your experiences with young guinea pigs like these. I know in my heart no piggy will ever live up to how amazing Scuzzy was, but I would like to have them in the house again.
