When I was younger I had multiple guinea pigs (even had a litter at one point). I absolutely adored them, they are definitely one of my all time favourite pets I've ever had.
After my exams in the summer, I was thinking of perhaps getting a few as I really miss having them, and I enjoy owning them, but I was wondering if anybody would recommend any certain breeds they've owned? I had Abyssinians and Teddies before, but I'd be interested in owning some other breeds, particularly Peruvians as they are gorgeous. Does anyone find they have different temperaments, are some easier to take care of (obviously the long fur is harder to take care of). I was just looking for advice in general.
Thank you!

The best breed is rescue!

I very much suggest you adopt some pigs from a small animal shelter instead of seeking out specific breeds. Pigs each have their own personalities so you could have a mean Peruvian and a super sweet America, or vice versa.

You'll most likely have to trim a long haired pigs fur, and poo might get stuck in it if you don't.

Good luck on your piggy search!

If you would consider going to a rescue that would be fab. Rescue piggies are bonded and often quite tame already not to mention health checked before they leave. We have a recommended Rescue locator here Guinea Pig Rescue Centre Locator

I am not really sure that breeds make any difference I have had laid back pigs in all breeds and equally skittish ones in all breeds. One things for sure though when you do get piggies please post some photos of them here!

I have an Abyssinian and an American. My American is very chill and my Abyssinian is hyper. I think all guinea pigs are different regardless of their breeds though. They were both from pet shops because there are no rescues near by, but it is good to get them from a rescue.

There are documented tendencies but there's also any documented exceptions so I'm not sure. Himmis are said to be intelligent and playful, Rex laid back (but I have a friend at work with a personality that's quite the opposite), and I've read plenty of people saying that their abbys are independent and none-cuddly but I'm willing to bet someone here will prove that theory wrong :)
Getting pigs from a rescue means you are likely to get adults who's personalities are known, and you and the pigs can choose each other, if that makes sense?

I hope you don't mind me mentioning as I don't wish to appear nosey, but have you a plan if you need to move to find work? I know for some folk but not all, finishing exams can be the beginning of many life-changes :) Just something to think about perhaps if it applies to you x
