We looked round it in May 2 years ago and decided to buy, the big windows and the lay out of the house looked amazing and we fell in love. Then came our first summer in the house last year and we realised that the sun starts off at the back and warms the house and then moves overhead to shine in the front windows and thoroughly bake the place! :o

Not a problem as it was just us two and this year we have the piggies to think about while we are at work. Stupid owners before us didn't have the common sense to install decent windows so the only windows downstairs are thin long ones that someone could climb through if left open overnight or while we are not home! Only two windows upstairs (the previous owners childrens rooms) have small windows up high that can be left open oh and the bathroom one humph.

So last night when I went bed I opened the two long ones in our bedroom, the two spare room ones and the bathroom one. Came down today and it was already 18 degree's so whacked open all the downstairs ones and will leave the front bay window curtains closed all day but panicking now over what I will do when we go to work during the day. Do you think some crushed ice in the water bottles, putting a fan on, leaving curtains closed (they get light from the back window) and opening all the small windows upstairs will be enough?

my house is EXACTLY the same...!
i leave my curtens closed at the front, frozen bottles of water covered with socks in the cage... the crushed ice in the water sounds like a good idea...
i also give mine frozen treats... like frozen corn and pop a few bits of fruit and veg in the freezer... :)
as long as you keep the air cirulating like you are with a fan is one of the best things to do... :)

i really feel your pain my house is a sauna too...!

maybe i should rent my living room out to you all cause it stays cool all through the summer, its an old cottage and the room is quite dark and stays cool. I move into my conservatory in the summer seeking out the heat, but its nice to have a room to cool in. My indoor pigs live in the study which was once a garage and the previous owners did not insulate it too well so that room also stays cool in the summer months xx
