My Badger is on Batril and Bio Lapis as I thought he had impaction.

It's got a bit more loose down there now and he doesn't seem very good on his back legs. I'm worried. He didn't eat any of his veg today although he ate some grass and a piece of apple I gave him. I'm very worried now that he looks a tad unsteady on his back legs. He is a bit of a fattie but was ok until now on his legs :-( I'm trying to clean his bottom as often as I can but it's stressing him out. Poor thing hates it. What more can I do? What's happening to him? :-(

Sorry to hear that Badger isn't too good today.

I know that you have taken him to the vet, so I guess that the vet took his temperature, checked his heart and breathing, and prescribed the baytril for a possible infection.

Antibiotics can cause a tummy upset. Perhaps leave Badger off any green veg or grass for a day or so to help to settle his tummy down. Bio Lapis should help with his digestion but if you are in any doubt, seek further advice.

Please check that he is drinking ok and eating ok. Perhaps carrots or corn on the cob might help him for the moment.

If he is dragging his back legs and feeling weak, I would contact the vet again as soon as you can.

I have a guinea pig that is nearly 5 years old and has gone off his back legs twice in the last few months. The good news is that he is okay now. He went off them first in June and after a couple of weeks regained use of them again and he then went off them again in September and again regained use of them. I gave him Osteocare liquid which is available from chemists although they might have to order it like they did for me. I think the answer is just Osteocare and time.:)

Thanks guys. I just brought him in again and clean his bum. I put him on the floor to watch him and he did seem to walk a little better. I think I'll just take him straight back to the vet asap.

The vet did weigh him and listen to his breathing, but didn't take his temperature. I don't think I've ever known the vet take their temperature, I can't remember him doing so.

I'll keep him off grass as you suggest. Am syringing some bio into him as I don't trust that he'll drink it from the bottle.

If he is no better tomorrow I'd probably give the vet a ring. He could be a bit dehydrated so syringe him plenty of water in case he isn't getting to his bottle. Stop greens for a couple of days to help his tummy.

I don't think I've ever known the vet take their temperature, I can't remember him doing so.

I am sure you would remember because they put the thermometer up the piggies bottom! Ouch! :o:))

Pineapple juice

Try giving him some pineapple juice. It is a miracle medicine with rabbits tummies. My vet always recommends this. It's saved one of my rabbits on several occasions.

Gosh that's a new one on me, pineapple juice! I bet they'd love it.

He's no worse. He didn't have much appetite yesterday which worried me more. But I've kept up the antibiotics, pro biotic and bottom cleaning regime and today he's quite hungry.

His bottom is still very poo-ey :-( I guess I'll just have to give the medicine a bit longer to work?

Thanks for thinking of us. I'm hopeful that he'll get through this... :-)

Pineapple juice

Yeah pineapple juice is good for both constipation and diarrhoea - but make sure it's unsweetened and 100% pure pineapple juice. It contains the enzyme, bromeline, which breaks down blockages. Though there might also be additional properties which contribute to its fantastic success in treating bunny digestive problems.

Really? Have you had a bad experience using it?

I've only had positive experience of using it. It is a quite a common treatment given to rabbits, like I say it has been recommended by my vet who is a rabbit and guinea pig expert. But it's always worth checking with your own vet.

Fair enough. I haven't had any experiences with it. I think I would be a bit nervous to use it because I have never tried it. You should listen to your vet as he has given you this info with good faith. It's a new one for me :)
