Hi, this may seem and odd posting but as some of you know I've only had my little boys for 4 weeks so I'm new to this and sometime need a little bit help :)
Ok, my hubby was on his way into the city today so I asked him to pick up another bag of hay from pets@home the one that we had when we first got our boys nice soft hay that they liked....seemed a simple request.
Well he comes home with the right bag of hay but straight away...I honestly think it looks like straw not hay! it does not look the first bag we had at all. Ive got some meadow hay from my local pet shop that I'm using at the moment because we live in a village it's not easy to always pop to a big pet stores in the city so our little local pet shop is ok but they sell smaller sizes which don't last and work out quite costly in the long run...anyway :btt: I'm posting a photo of the hay before I open it to see what you think, do you think its normal hay?
(It's along side the normal meadow hay I'm using at the mo)
Many thanks
Kell.

it definitely doesn't look very green...what does it say on the bag? I'm thinking that maybe it is the type of hay that is better used for bedding, even though it is safe if they consume it. not too sure though as I'm from Canada and hay might be different over there

It does look quite coarse but it really depends on the harvest what the hay turns out like. I can have 2 bags of the same hay that are completely different. Just check it doesn't smell musty or mouldy as that can cause fungal issues.

Looks to me like typical p@h hay - dry, brown, short strands - this is why I don't use it any more. If I were you I would take it back and order some from Internet sites like hay for pets or dust free hay. Alternatively you could see about buying a bale from a local farm shop.

thats hay cut and meant to be used for bedding. they do eat it tho, but just nibble and ignore.

Thank you very much for all the replies I will take it back I think unless I defiantly need to use it but it will be for bedding only.
I'm a bit funny about which hay after my vet said never to get hay straight from a farm (just like the lady I got them from did) as it is dusty and quite often contains mites etc.
I will have a look at online suppliers thank you for that tip. Sorry about my first message being a bit hard to read in places due to the missing words lol, I've not had much sleep since Friday when my daughter came down with chicken pox hence the reason I did not go with hubby to fetch my own hay :)
Many thanks again
Kell x
