I've been away for Christmas and Gemma's been looking after my piggies and buns. She said on the phone that the pigs weren't eating and drinking as much as I said they do so I was a bit worried.

I've been back a day and they're all back to eating all their grass, hay, veg and pellets.

Do guineapigs pine for their owners? That's what it seems like, the bunnies couldn't care less who feeds them as long as someone does, but I'm really surprised my three noticed the difference.

I am absolutely sure they know their "mum". Its a common myth here in DK amongst people that a tame cavy is tame to everybody. No. I have very tame cavies but for strangers they are suspicious. They have to check the new person out before relaxing and trusting. I have guineas who get up in my hand when they like to get up and cuddle. But no way they walk up into a strangers hand. I believe if a guinea is very tame to their "mum" they can also get "upset" when someone else is handling them or feeding them.

I think they get used to certain people aswell. My cousin was holding Sooty once and he done everything to get back over to me. He was ok with my uncle but wouldn't move. When I was at Dundee my neighbour (The piggies great Granny :D) looked after them and they ate everything.

most definatly more so my boys I think floo will wheak until he is picked up by me anyone else wont do and he struggles until He is handed back to me where he relaxes same with most of my pigs

Mine are definatly my babies - they all run out to great me but pretty much ignore anyone else. My Mum fed them this morning for me because my awful hangover meant I couldn't open my eyes until 10am and my Mum said they ate it OK but they did not great her with the enthusiasm they great me with!

Also, my neighbour who has looked after my rabbit before said that he sits and sulks and won't do anything whilst he is with her. He eats and drinks but that is it - won't run around, ignores his toys. Bless him....

Looks like they missed you Kathryn!

I agree - I think they know the difference when someone different looks after them.

When I went away on my hols for two weeks I told my neighbour who was looking after them that the girls would make a fuss of her and are really friendly - when I got back, she said that everyday when she went to see them, they would ignore her, turn their back on her and wait until she had gone until they would eat! They would sit in the bedroom until she had gone! haha - I couldn't believe it!

Makes you feel wanted though doesn't it :) hehe
