I’m on a guinea pig Facebook group and it really annoys as 1) people don’t take there poorly pigs to the vet and 2) some of the advise is shocking. This was a piggy with an eye injury. Someone further up suggested a brand of eyesdrops from the chemist and this person here suggested tea bags! Not once was a vet advised until I piped up but the owner took no notice :(

I used to be on a snail forum many years ago and one very bossy person with no clue about snail biology advised feeding snails milk to add calcium to the diet (yeah like snails evolved the enzymes to digest milk proteins and lactose) and thought my suggestion of calcium carbonate tablets (which is what you get in snail shells and chalky soil and rocks) was disgracefully risky! I just left in despair and have successfully kept snails for 17 years since then on a vegan diet of veg and calcium carbonate tablets like they would get in the wild :) social media often encourages uninformed idiots to air their views unfortunately...

That is a major problem Claire! People often don't like to be told their piggy needs to see a vet, yet they'll listen to advice like the above - grrr! I do try to be helpful but on a lot of posts I find I'm wasting my breath!
