hais, why are there so much illness to guinea pig. mine already have lice, then now loss in weight and diarrhea.. but luckly thanks to you guys, i got some good advise and i will make sure my piggy recovers. hope those other owners piggy have a speedy recovery.....
i always wonder how come now a days, guinea piggy offen get sick? it is becoz of the environment or there may be some otehr cause. becoz in many years ago, i have a neighbour who keeps guinea pigs. i can say he is very stingy becoz he dun eat feed his guinea pig with proper food plus not even hays and his guinea pig live up to 8.5years.. DO note that i am only telling, not asking you people to follow....
i also saw the post about Garry....hope it recover soon...

I'm sorry but your piggy maybe getting sick as I believe you may not be looking after it correctly. I have been reading your posts and it looks to me like the piggy is getting no hay (is essential for the digestive system and teeth) or dry food. It is getting veg what type I do not know and also you are keeping it in a fish tank which cannot be good for it! :(

the fish tank i place it in is really huge....yes i am very regretted...becoz i didnt thou hays was important even thou i read it on internet. i am going to get it tommr *** its now midnight in my country... probably i guess not feeding it with hays causes all the problem.

There are times when there are very few posts on the forum in the Health and Illness section. There are times like today when there's almost a full page of currently poorly piggies. There are a great many reasons for illness, as owners we can only look after the animals needs as best we can, to the best of our knowledge and ability, and hope that it is enough. The odds are though, most guinea pigs will fall ill from one time to another.

after reading almost all the post in this section, i gain alot knowledge...however my hairs stand when i read that guinea even pee out blood n have lumps....OMG(sorry if christian happen to read this, a swearing word, no offences)...
other than proper diet n alot of time spend with a guinea pig, what other things should i prevent doing or should i do more to make my guinea pig live longer n healthy? Even thought i do alot of research before buying this piggy, i still feel that i am a noob..so i only bought one...

The most important things you need to respect are:

1. Proper diet.
2. Proper housing and bedding.
3. Taking the animal to the vets when they need to.

Respecting their social needs is also important; they thrive most when they are with at least one other of their own kind, another guinea pig. Understanding their behaviour is always beneficial.

Piggies certainly aren't the 'easy' pets they were once made out to be!

Overall guinea pigs are quite healthy animals.
If you look at the threads closely you will see that many of them are questions from people who have not looked in the archives to see if their question has been previously answered.
That is why day after day you will see questions about skin/dental problems etc.
The forum can give a false impression as to the health status of guinea pigs!

Tyson what country are you in?

I am pleased you are going to buy some hay and proper food for your guinea pig. Please also look into a proper cage or pen of a much bigger size (maybe 120cm by 50cm). And if your guinea pig doesn't popcorn any more are they aren't as happy as before. They would be much happier with a friend.

Well done on coming here for advice and for going to get the right equipment to look after them.

i am from singapore.. and many guinea pig are abandon here... but after the G-force movie(cant blame the movie), many crazy a55 when to adopt guinea pig...and i hate it.. ok anyway hmm i will listen to you guys and if my piggy get worst(hopefully not), vet is definitely the next solution... i just want my piggy to get well soon...

Here is a link to a healthy diet. Laura has worked it out on the recommendations of the best medical website for guinea pigs.
You can try and replace some vegetables with local ones, like pak choi etc.

But unless you have solved the diarrhea problem, you cannot give your guinea pig any fresh food. It needs only dry food and hay.

I have already given you the link to the medical website in my first post. If you want, you can print out the page and take it with you to your vet.
Here it is again: http://www.guinealynx.info/diarrhea.html

Thank you! But this shows that even with the correct food and housing, a piggy can still get ill. I'm pleased you are going to go and get the right food/hay for your piggy, but a fish tank really isn't ideal for piggies as it doesn't offer enough ventilation.:)
