I was reading in the paper, that summer is set to be hotter and longer than usual. What precautions are you taking for our furry friends.

I feel a bit in the dark as this is my first summer with pigs and this evening I feel my room is pretty hot. Just wondering what precautions other people are taking :)!

Thanks.

The temp in my car read 32 degrees today :... Phew! It was warm!

My girls are back out in their hutch now and this is in the shade all day until about 7pm.

I have switched out their plastic houses for wicker style ones and they have two small frozen bottles in old socks (one upstairs and one downstairs - although I may move them both downstairs tomorrow, as going upstairs seemd like too much effort today! :)) )

When they are in their run is is covered so the majority is in the shade.

My pigs are house pigs, what precautious if any should I have to take? I'm really unsure obviously they get usual anyway water etc, I was thinking about a fan but I wouldn't feel confortable leaving it on when I'm not about.

You can get cool tiles for them to lay on if it's warm. Frozen bottles/cool pods should go down well too.

Can you leave your window open to allow a breeze in, and maybedraw the curtains to keep the room cool?

Yes I can do all that easily, with the likes of ice pods is there a risk they will get to cold?

I don't think so, they can alway move away if they get too chilly :)

There's a post about them, they're made of special stuff they can't get cold burns from and can't nibble either :)

I have a question!

Are those cooling tiles you get for chins any good for piggies? I seen them in my local pet store all the time but are they safe for piggies?

Yes they're fine :)

I shall be doing as i've done the past 4 summers; giving each a frozen water bottles in a sock, draping hand-wrung wet towels at all hutch fronts & shed windows & of course replacing them when they're almost dry. :)

I'm so glad I have found thsi post as I felt yesterday that with the heat it was maybe going to be too warm mojules having fleece in their hutch :( and I didn't want them getting too hot and becoming ill

is there anything else that can be used that is a wee bit thinner than fleece. The ceiling fan in livingroom was left on low all night for them and it still wasn't that cool this morning so I have now opened both windows to let a little breeze into them :)

we also hav an icepod on chill at the moment and we will need to get a spare woater bottle into the fridge as when we refill one every day we fill one and leave it in the fridge until needed to keep it extra cool and of course we had better not forget to give them all their cool veggies or they won't be happy piggies :(|)

Well this is my girls first summer with me and luckily their room is north facing and is cool in the summer and cosy in the winter which tiles floor.

They get/got grass time before 11am at the weekend and after 7pm, even in the shade it was too much for them as the garden is south facing and lots and lots of sun. I was worried the fleece would be too warm for them as well so I've got newspaper and hay at the moment but there is "teddy" of course to use him as their pillows and a big bouncy fleece laying area on top of the house.

Cool as cucumbersa8)
