Just because the other post(called hand rearing baby...?) is so long winded i thought it was probly time to start a new one...

This morning i woke up to Thorn doing that weird gasping/hiccupping breathing.... :(

So i threw myself and thorn in the car and drove like a maniac to the vets...

where she said he has a chest infection...
she has given him some batrill by injection... and I'm due back tomorow for another one...
hes been struggling to breath so (not sure wether i should have done this really) I sprayed a bit of ventalin (emergency inhailer for asthmatics) towards him and it seems to have helped his breathing slightly... hes no longer gasping but his breathing is still laboured...
hes had one ml of milk and half a ml of a glucose water mixture...

has anyone had there piggie survive this...?

BIG HUG

I am so sorry that Thorn has come down with chest infection; hand reared babies are more prone to these things. You have done a brilliant job to have seen him asap.

I hope that he can make it with your continued good care.

Please don't give him milk, but recovery food and vitamin C; keep it going throughout the night. His appetite will be diminished and every bit of food you can get into him can help his chances. Add probiotics to his food to counter the effect of the baytril on his guts. Weigh him twice daily.

Just wishing you and Thorn good luck! He's been a strong little guy so far, so you never know, he might come through this too. Fingers crossed and big hugs for you xx

oh no :( wish you and thorn all the best of luck xx

My friend's piggy, Zelda had a URI when she was only 2-3 weeks old. She had baytril and recovered well although she was left with a slight wheeze. She's over a year old now.

Everything crossed for Thorn. xx>>>

ive been offering him milk on a spoon as I'm weary to syringe feed him unless necisarry because lets face it the last thing i want is him inhailing milk...
hes been having small amounts of milk and hes been having glucose water mixture and a vit C water mixture...
he's eaten a bit of melon and his breathing is SO much better... still a rattle but no gasping and no laboured breathing... so fingers crossed we got to him in time...
hopefull he'll stay on track...
thankyou again....

Well I'm glad his breathing's better :) But if he's bloated, it's best to get that checked out by the vet.

Good Luck, he's an adorable little guy x)

hes not been pooing as much as he would and its been very soft... i wouldnt go as far to say diharrea (sorry cant spell) but its not exactly formed pellets either...
I'm assuming its the baytrill...?

it helps to settle their gut flora........when they have the antibiotics it mucks up their system :p

Keep offering him hay and mushed up pellets, ease off the fruits....this is always advised if they've got upset tum.

Wow, just read your other thread, don't know how I missed it! You have done such an amazingly wonderful job! It's been so up and down, such a tough job for you, and Thorn is just the cutest little thing I've seen! I really hope he gets through and grows into a healthy, strong piggy!xox

Probiotics you can from the vets, from p@h or over the internet, from places like vet.uk.

I am glad to hear that Thorn is still there. What a little fighter!
