For a brief while I thought I would have to rescue another guinea pig today. I was in the closest pet store (I hate pet stores, but that's another subject) to buy Redemption another water bottle, as this morning I broke the one he came with when I dropped it; it was a hard styrene plastic and it cracked.
While in the pet store I had a look at the guinea pigs; there were 8 new ones there, 5 in one enclosure, 2 in another, and 1 in another. The largest one, mostly white with pink skin but a brown pirate patch over his left eye and a brown ear to match, looked like he had eczema; he had red, crusted lesions all over his back, and behind his right ear he had lost a hunk of hair. He otherwise looked to be some sort of Abyssinian, rosettes of spiky hair everywhere. I thought, OMG, I should take this one home and treat him and take him to the guinea pig vet I found. Before I made this decision I asked the clerk what could they tell me about this animal. That's when I discovered that he was already in the process of being rescued; they saw that one of the other guinea pigs was beating up on this one terribly when they received them (they are all boars of different ages), and the bully was the one off by himself.
So I didn't have to rescue this one, at least not yet! I bought some Johnson's baby shampoo just in case. Everyone was clean otherwise and looked well cared for, and their enclosures were clean. Even though the conditions seemed good, I got the impression that Redemption must think he has gone to guinea pig heaven with all that I do for him based on the advice I get here.
I think I also discovered why they call them "pigs". I managed to catch the one with the sores, and when I picked him up he squealed like a pig!
