Stoooopid question, but are piggies okay outside in hutch in heavy rain, thunder & lightening?

I'm just preparing myself for tomorrow and I have my foster boys outside :(

I have looked at weather and it is saying the storms will start around 1a.m tonight and go on into tomorrow. It says strong gales too. I've got my pigs in for the night. Just in case.

hmmm, I'll keep my ears open, if it gets bad, I will go out with the torch and bring them in. I sleep lightly anyway, I've put a sqube into the bed area as extra protection....bless I must be crazy, I love my piggies.

HI LIl

Glad you are thinking pro-actively about your piggies ref the incoming weather.

Ultimately it will depend upon
a) the piggies and their temperaments and
b) "Risk"
a) If they're already trying to adjust to a new environment having been rescued, and are already quite timid, then personally I would bring them in as any increase in the already stressful events they have experienced could cause URI's/mites and other illnesses.

b) If you think they are at risk of water/hail ingress into the cage (Possibly propelled by the high winds forecast) then I would put them in a more protected spot or bring them in

They will be fine in a cardboard box overnight - I would suggest that it would be easier/less risky to bring them in now rather than in the middle of a thunderstorm/heavy rain in the dead of night..

Thanks, they are quite well protected but I just worry anyway. The boys have been settled with me for many months now but only a week ago were moved outside to their new hutch, it's sturdy. I am south facing and the hutch is side on to the south. I'll go and grab an indoor set up for them and take a view in about an hours time. Agree its better to be prepared.

I do worry that it might be stressful for them though...right better go get an indoor set up. Thanks for your reply Pebble.

Well, the weather was okay through the night because it didn't wake me up, but it did at 7am. dashed downstairs took a look at the lounge back doors and was awash with heavy rain, thunder, lots of lightening.
That was enough for me...
threw on a pair of shoes, with piggy carrier in hand, ran across the wall, leaped over the fence onto another wall, ran across that, down the steps onto the soaking grass, their's Edward and Hornpipe looking like their isn't a care in the world. At the sight of me, they hotfooted it into their sqube in their hutch...making it easy for me...a return visit over the obstacle course and into the house. Only to be greeted by a huge thunder and lighting which knocked out the electrics for a moment...
So whilst I am still dripping wet from the rain, the piggies are safely deposited into their cage.
Oh and the funny part, I was only wearing a small bed robe without anything on underneath....lets hoping the neighbours weren't watching as I legged it over the fence...:yikes:

Now the weather is perfectly fine....but i checked and 10am appears to be another bad session so I'm hanging onto them until after that.

God this sounds amusing, exactly what I would do!

My 4 girls are outside and like you, their hutch is very secure and completely weather proof so I don't worry about them being wet or cold with all this rain but the thunder worries me. Last time it thundered I went and sat out in front of their cage and I talked to them through the rumbles but they were all happily munching away on broccoli so I dont worry as much when I thunders now :)

Glad to hear your piggies are OK @lil . We've had awful rain in Sheffield but I haven't heard or seen any thunder and lightening.

My piggies have been indoors too.

Well the boys are now back and seem totally oblivious as to all the commotion this morning. Hubbie comes down late morning and said, " well did you fetch them in?" He knows me well...I fret always about them.
