The weather forecast for the area I live in says there’s going to be thunderstorms over the rest of the weekend.

I’m a little frightened of them myself but I’m mostly concerned about the boys and how they’ll cope with the loud bangs.

I’ve read a few horror stories about piggies becoming stressed and having heart attacks during thunderstorms so as you can imagine I’m worried about my two.

They’re indoors. Will they be okay? Anything I can do to make them feel safe & secure?

You could maybe put the t.v on for noise to distract the pigs. Although some people say dont keep things like that on. Shut the curtains to stop too much bright flashes coming through. Mine are fine in thunderstorms. I think guinea pigs mostly pick up sort of sharp high pitch noises. Any time mine hear bassy music or strorm kind of sounds. They are fine

I'm scared of thunder myself but luckily the pigs don't bat an eye. Mine just sleep through it like nothing is happening, same with fireworks. Fingers crossed yours aren't bothered either.
I however will be hiding under a blanket lol

I’ve had mine out on the lawn early and got them all in before the storms are due. I think indoor piggies are less aware of storms but if it is loud then leaving the tv or radio on for background noise can help them be less anxious. Mainly they will just hide in their little houses until the noise ends.

Thank you for your advice. I’ll just pop the iPad on and play it at full volume on a tv show or something. They were absolutely fine during bonfire night & I live very close to the field where the displays take place . I’m hoping they’ll be the same if we get thunderstorms.

So am I! I used to have an irrational phobia of thunderstorms, so bad that I used to check the weather forecast every so many hours in a day & would make myself sick at the idea.
I’m a bit better now however I still hide and try and drown out the noise and the light flashing.
As I mentioned before to another piggy person, I live quite near to a field/ space where firework displays are carried out and it gets very loud on bonfire night. The boys didn’t seem to care at all when all the loud bangs were going off.

Mine were too, lots of hay and cardboard boxes stuff so they could hide and feel extra safe

Grabbed a big cardboard box and had a primark bag going spare so I’ve got something for them to hide in. They’ve got fleece tunnels and teepees so they’ll most likely hide in them if they’re scared X

Thank you x

Yeah I used to do that before I even got my guinea pigs but I’m still quite cautious of the idea of using electricals. They really surprised me on bonfire night and didn’t seem to care at all.

I guess they could pick up on my anxiousness too, so I’d better stay calm :D

Guinea pigs are silly beasts. Ours are not bothered by loud bangs, dogs barking, police sirens...but spooked to scampering about by a baby robin on the lawn...and they HATE jingling noises like a bunch of keys or a tray of wineglasses. I think they are very sensitive to high-pitched sounds.

My piggies are fine with fireworks and thunderstorms but they hate it when burglar alarms go off down the road, and they get very freaked out if I watch a video online as they can't work out where the talking is coming from! They used to be scared of wine cork pops but they quickly learned that wine corks= piggy mummy being overly generous with then snacks, so they popcorn and zoom excitedly now if they hear me opening a bottle :)
