Hello everybody! My guinea pig, Tiberius, a Texel and Teddy mix, is having some trouble. I adopted him from a Humane Shelter and don't know for certain how old he is but I estimate him to be quite old because he has cloudy eyes and seems kind of blind. He also has a little bit of bowed legs and has in the last month been prescribed a Vitamin C medicine from our vet. However, lately I have noticed his feces to be sticky and they occasionally clump together and make a little ball in the shape of a raspberry. I have also noticed he sleeps a lot and just this morning, spat up green saliva. On top of that he is not peeing a lot. Does anyone know what might be going on? If you guys can give me any advice that would be appreciated. Thanks.

I’m sorry I can’t be of any help, I’m sure someone will be along soon who has more experience and can help you. Hope you can get Tiberius well soon poor boy x

Sticky poo over more than a day merits a vet visit, especially as he is more lethargic than usual. Have you tried him on a probiotic, such as Fibreplex? These can be helpful getting guts back to normal. Why did your vet prescribe vitamin C for your boy; piggies should get their vitamin C from daily veggies and occasional fruit.

I hope Tiberius picks up soon.

My vet prescribed him Vitamin C because Tiberius was taken from a breeder that didn't give her guinea pigs the daily veggies needed in his diet. Thank you for the Fibreplex suggestion. I will definitely look into it.

Hi and welcome!

Please weigh Tiberius daily at the same time instead of weekly to keep an eye on the crucial hay intake, which should make over 80% of the daily food intake; too much veg in the diet (which should only be about 10% of the daily food intake) can cause fermentation in the gut.

Long Term Balanced General And Special Needs Guinea Pig Diets

Check whether Tiberious is suffering from impaction (which affects about 10% of mostly older boars but can also affect young boars on a diet with too little hay/malnutrition) and if necessary adjust the diet as recommended in the guide. Impaction - How To Help Your Guinea Pig.

If your boy is not suffering from impaction, I would take him off his fresh food for at least 24 hours until the poos have normalised again. If problems recur or don't show noticeable signs of improvement within 24 hours, then you need to see a vet.
If you need to see a vet, also have the back teeth checked by a vet.

Here is information on cataracts; guinea pigs can suffer both from young age onset (congenital) and old age cataracts.

Has your vet checked for signs of arthritis?

The vet said that Tiberius was suffering from overgrown molars and he was not able to chew properly ( there is an appointment later for the molars to be filed). He also has an infection which the vet gave him an antibiotic that SHOULD help the recovery process. If the molars grow back again... Tiberius will have to euthanized because the bills for filing down teeth are too expensive to keep doing every month or even 3 weeks. Hopefully, my poor piggy will be able to chew in no time and wear down the molars.

In addition, he was also having trouble swallowing and couldn't retain food in his mouth. He had an infection in his lymph node, which the vet thinks might be cancer.

Poor Tiberius.
Not the greatest of diagnoses for you to hear.
Let’s hope that the teeth get sorted and nothing else proves to be serious.
Keeping you in my thoughts
