Ok, so most of you will know that I lost little rex baby Boo a couple days ago - he was very poorly when I went to collect him from the lady I was getting him and 3 other pigs from (NOT WHERE I USUALLY GET MY PIGS FROM!). He was 5 weeks old.

COD - Unknown

This morning, I found Coda, another rex baby - his brother... dead.

Symptoms were, hunched over while walking, squinted eyes, dribbling and drinking ALOT of water.

He was eating perfectly fine, moving about ok (besides hunching over etc)...

We think it may have been Vitamin C deficiency/scurvy.
Since Boo died, AND another boar from the same litter died... seems like they have all died because of the same reason.

I went to see my good friend today, who owns lots of piggies and has done for many years.... she's given me a vitamin solution to syringe into the remaining 3 piggies orally. 0.4ml first day, 0.2ml second, 0.1ml third - just to give them a boost and hopefully stop them from going downhill aswell.

They seem fine, walking perfectly.. eating and drinking but one in particular is smaller than the other two.. so i'm keeping my eye on him (all of them!).

FINGERS CROSSED FOR THE 3 REMAINING SWISS BABIES!

Perhaps visiting the vet maybe an idea in case it's contagious - best to cover all bases.

Have everything crossed for the remaining babies. x

Oh Emiley I am sorry to hear this, and I have to agree with Flintstones I would take them all to the vet.

Better to be safe hun x

Yes I agree with Flintstones. If you can take them to the vet. I hope the swiss triplets get better soon. Sending healing vibes:laluot_29::laluot_29: :laluot_29:

It sounds very strange! I'd definitely take them all to a good vet just to be on the safe side. The death of Coda and Boo could have always been something genetic but best to get the other 3 babies checked. They look pretty good and chunky in the photos you posted so fingers crossed for them all!

Really sorry to hear this, I would defo get the other babies checked out at the vets. I know the lady that you got these piggies from and they are usually very healthy pigs. I'm sure she would be devastated about this happening.

I agree

The symptoms remind me of listeriosis.

hope the triplets are ok

That's so sad about Coda and Boo. Sweet dreams little ones.

I agree, best to get the others checked out at the vets.

Oh my that is terrible news, sending you hugs.

Hope all is well with the triplets, I would get them to a vet just to be on the safe side x

I am so sorry to hear this Emiley. I must admit I did have concerns when I watched your video of him; he was hopping like a rabbit & looked so small & weak. If there seems to be a high rate of deaths of babies from there I would be getting your others checked by a vet asap. I hope the others will be okay.

Really awful news, i would definately visit the vets to get a check up, just to be safe.

I would normally take them to the vets, but they are showing no signs of sickness. All are moving about perfectly fine, eating and drinking.

I weighed them all this morning so I can see if they are gaining weight ok, especially the smallest (Skittles).

I'm sorry if the lady see's this thread, but i'm just telling it how it is...
The pigs have not been on the correct diet, it mostly consists of rabbit food, which we all know is not beneficial to a piggy what so ever. The food they were on had no added vitamin c.

Thus, the conclusion my friends and I have come to is that the cause of death for the piggies was indeed vitamin c deficiency/scurvy.

If I notice any pig looking ill or going downhill, I will most certainly take them to the vet - as always.

They are now on my diet, which is excel nuggets and fresh veg (including veg high in vit c) once a day, plus the vit c solution i'm syringe feeding them.

I will keep you all updated x

Very sorry to hear of your loss, so sad. Sounds like its a case of the wrong diet, lets hope so for the sake of the other piggies :(

hi i no the lady ** talking about as i got my 6 piggies from her and all mine are very healthy and i know alot of people who also have and theres are very healthy too she feeds them proper piggi food and veg as i have been round at feeding times and they all get a good variety x

I know her too as 6 of 8 of my piggies came from her which she has treated them all for mites ringworm fungal and lice all for free and the pig's that didn't come from her also two P@H hammies she helped me with, is always (even after over a year) at th e end of a phone ready to help, she would take any pet back if the owners circumstances changed and has often taken in animals dumped on her doorstep, she would never of sold any piggies. If she knew they were I,ll unless to a very experienced owner, I have seen her buy sack's of carrots and trolley
full of veg when seen out shopping. I am sorry your piggies died it is very sad but this lady is very very caring towards animals and personally I have always found her to go out of her way to help

ill defo second it too x

I know she's very caring, and I know she loves her animals, i know they also get veggies, BUT too many are dropping down dead for this to be a coincidence.

She, herself has told me lots have died.

The dried food is NOT guinea pig food... I still have the bag here. It's rabbit food, I know for a fact it is as my friend Teraza gives it to her rabbits! The babies came to me with very loose poo, since changing their dried food to excel nuggets.. they now have nice solid poo - I rest my case.

Also, how do you know who i'm talking about? This may not even be the same lady?

As i spoke to her last night I'm pretty sure it's the same person, if i had bought something and it went wrong id go back to where it was bought and see what they could do before moaning on a public forum of which she can't join (being a breeder) where she cant defend herself, I don't know the ins and outs of a duck's... i just wanted people to know she isn't the evil, cruel type of breeder you made her out to be and is very saddened the piggies died as she is any time she loses one.

It makes more sense to tell her to she can check other piggies, as for rabbit food i know she mixes her own food for them which includes rabbit food grasses and guinea pig and feeds pregnant sows with extra veg food it may just be that you got some that didn't mix properly,

She says quote 'thank you to all of you who know me for your kind words' unquote for Gemma Laurie and Helen (who she don't know but is grateful anyway)

I've not made her out to be cruel or nasty at all...
I've simply said, I PERSONALLY don't think they are on the right diet.

I'm heart broken, she knows that...

I'm not going to say anymore, I mentioned no names - on purpose, so I'm not trying to dig at her or get her in trouble in anyway, I like her...

I just feel their food needs to be changed that's all.

Also, I have told her - she knows I lost Coda.

it is the same lady trust me i no never had one problem with mine and all 6 came from her there very healthy pigs she will go out her way to help any piggy she can not nessersarily from her as she rescued one i found being ill treated and she took it in no problem and is doing everything she can for him i couldnt as it was a boy and to her having alot die there is a number of reasons any piggie can die not just down to the food mine all came with a bag of food from her when i got mine and it was very dried and grassy which looked ok to me x

Whee are so sorry about Coda and Boo 8...

I am glad you've let the lady know about Coda, now she can be just as vigilant as you in keeping an eye on her piggies, like i know you will with yours :)

GOOD LUCK with the three little ones xoxoxoxoxoxo
