Hello all, it's been a very long time since I've been on here, but wasn't feeling too chirpy after Jack had died and it was a bit hard seeing other people talking about their piggies.

However, I have my sisters two guinea pigs now, as she has two kids, she was struggling to look after them, both of them were pet store bought, but in the adoption section as Tilly had an ear infection which lead to her being very eccentric and more than a little lopsided, she was put together with Tabby and they were adopted out as a pair. So, I have now inherited this odd piggy and her rather frustrated cage mate, unfortunately, Tilly's problem had not been dealt with fully and it recurred.

She is now permanently on antibiotics (Septrin) for fear that the infection may start again. I'm highly dubious of the effectiveness of this, surely the bacteria would have built a resistance to these antibiotics? She has been on them for a good number of months, perhaps a year, I BELIEVE she's 2 years oldish, but I'm not entirely certain.

Basically, I'm not sure that the antibiotics would work this long and I'd like opinions on that.

Also, I have been told I can take her off if I observe her closely, but I also don't want to cause her more upset than is necessary, while we both hate the routine of giving her the antibiotics daily I can imagine having to take her for a more serious vet trip could be more upsetting.

So I'm not entirely sure what to do and any further information and opinions would be great!

Oh dear. I'm certainly no expert but I'd think the same as you. I'd be taking her to a cavy-savvy vet for a second opinion, personally.

Doesn't this also mean she should theoretically be on probiotics permanently, to keep her tum happy as well?

Well, he's a cavy owner himself, but I would have thought this is basic biology, it's what my A level tells me anyway.
So, I'm not sure really but I'm not really in the know about many vets good with guinea pigs in my area. I will have a peek though see what I can find in terms of other potentially more knowledgeable vets.

I would have thought that too, but, the vet didn't suggest or offer any probiotics. She does seem ok, though I will admit she is smaller and slimmer than her cage mate though I wonder if that has something to do with being hyperactive most of the time, but, certainly a concern I've had too. Again, perhaps time to drop into a more knowledgeable vet!
