Time for a butt bath?

My 2 boars are 4 months old now. They're short haired and appear pretty clean but have noticed they have a slight whiff lately! :x I know you should avoid bathing young piggies but they're both around 700g / 16 weeks now. I'm considering giving them a butt bath to clean their grease glands do you think this is a good idea or should i wait a few more weeks? When did you first bathe your piggies? ?/

I would use one of the Gorgeous Guineas shampoos - not sure which one is best for a boar butt bath if anyone can recommend one?

Can't help with the GG products i'm afraid....

But thougth maybe you could start off with a decent old wipe down of their grease glands and butt area with a wet washer and see if this helps :)

I suppose all board are different but I have found that both my youngest boars have only started getting active grease glands recently, one is 11 months and one is 9 months so what you may be experiencing is them scent marking as they'll be hitting their hormonal period now, boars do this to mark their territory and it smells very musky and not good at all!
 
I didn't start cleaning my boar's grease glands until I actually saw and felt the hair around there sticky and greasy. For Hazelnut, this was when he was just over 1 year old. For Peanut Butter we just started butt baths and he is now 8 months old.

I don't know about GG shampoos as they are not sold here, but the small animal shampoo we do get here did nothing for the grease gland. It works a treat for when the piggies get dirty elsewhere, but for the grease gland I use Cetaphil cleanser.
 
The Gorgeous Guineas products will make them smell better but wont clean grease glands. If you're in the uk you have to use swafega? I think that's what it's called. And if you're in the USA than use this stuff called Goop. But you shouldn't have to clean thei grease glands until you can actually feel the grease or see it pretty clearly.
 
I think swarfega will be a little too harsh to clean delicate bits! It's used by mechanics over here to remove ingrained grease and oil from hands after working on engines!

Depends on how bad it is to what I do..
If there's only a little grease I wet the area with small animal dry shampoo then use grooming wipes to lightly rub in circles until it comes off in a ball.

If it's worse then I have a small animal shampoo called vet sect. I put a blob of that on then wait a couple mins then put their bum in water and again use a circling motion with my finger on the area until it comes off.

Are we sure is the grease gland that smells? as boars mature they start to scent mark, which consists of spreading there balls and wiping their anal sac everywhere and boy it honks sometimes. Ive never found a grease glad to actually smell.
Fairy liquid works quite well to get it off. It loosens it and then I just gently pull it away, there not keen on the idea of it but its over in a sec, piggies had their rear being fiddled with.
 
I think it's most likely scent marking. It's more Otis than Wilbur (shock! He seems to be the gross one) and their grease glands dont really look greasy... I've just noticed quite a strong pooey whiff when I've picked him up a few times although he looks clean.

I've ordered some small animal wipes to keep in stock and if they do look a bit grubby in the future they will feel the wrath of a wet wipe! :)) I will avoid bathing them until it's really necessary.

Well i'm pretty sure i've read from multiple people on this forum that they use this to clean grease glands, but only grease glands! Goop is basically the US equivalent and it's the only thing that really cleans the grease gland.
 
Remember to actually open the anal sac up to get the gunk out- beware this stuff actually reeeeks!
