With My Piggies :)
Recently ive had a problem getting hold of my piggies regular supply of Alfalfa King Timothy hay - after ringing round today to try and find a supplier of their normal hay - i was told that timothy hay shouldn't be fed daily anyhow due to the high calcium content.

The Alfalfa King Hay i feed is similar to Oxbow (very long strands of green hay) - the pet shop i spoke to said that i should only be giving a handful of this every now and then and that they should have a lower quality hay to be fed daily - is this correct?

Anyone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong :)). I think the pet shop might have Alfalfa hay mixed up with Timothy because it is alfalfa that shouldn't be feed regularly to most piggies because of the calcium content whilst Timothy is a good one to be fed daily. So I think you should be good to carry on with what you are feeding them.

The problem i have is that i can't feed then their normal timothy hay as there is a long term stock issue with it and so I'm struggling to find a similar quality hay within traveling distance from me (as i dont drive).

I bought a bag of burgess hay on Thursday afternoon and will need to go out again now to purchase some more. The hay ive bought over the last 5 days has ended up in the bin as my pigs prefer to pee and poop on it than eat it (they have their hay in hay racks and all they are doing is pulling it out in to their litter trays). I'm also finding that they are consistantly weeking for food and seem hungry all the time!.l

I really need to find a good supply of hay and fast.....

have you tried the willow warren? their timothy hay is fantastic quality but expensive unless you buy the bulk deal. i buy the two large box deal minimum and then they hay works out similar prices to other places.

hay for pets are a good site aswell. you get alot for your money. they do ings hay which is a stalky meadow hay, soft timothy hay and a timothy and rye mix hay.

Just wanting to doublecheck, so sorry if it's a dumb question.. Is the hay you're feeding them timothy hay or alfalfa hay or a mix? You can definitely feed them timothy hay every day, but not if it has alfalfa in it. Alfalfa should only be fed to young guinea pigs, as it is very high in calcium.

I'm afraid I can't help with suggesting somewhere to get the hay as I've only had my piggies a short while and I've been trying different ones to see what they like.

I'm pretty sure Alfalfa King is just the brand name so it is just Timothy hay they are asking about.

This is one of the best I've managed to find online as I got sick of buying so called 'good' quality hay and throwing it out due to it being dusty :o

It is a huge amount and took around 3 days to be delivered - smells like a summers day...oh and the piggies adore it :(|)
Mine won't touch American Timothy Western or the Alfalfa King which I thought they'd love :{

We're ordering the big one of that! I got a 2.5kg one to get an order up to £19 and the piggies LOVE the stuff! I'm going to get 14 kilos of that and when my university deposit money comes into my account I'll be getting the Timothy and Rye bale from Hayforpets. :)

:(|) It's definitely the one we're sticking to now, it's a really good buy. The piggies go mad for it and disappear under the mountains I give them rolleyes Having 12, it lasts surprisingly longer than I thought :(|)
