In The last few days My other guinea pig named Dash will only eat the fluffy ends of the Timothy hay. I'm worried he won't be getting enough hay in his digestive system .He also continues to eat his veggies.

Seed heads are a favourite for most piggies!

Keep uo weigh the routine weight checks to ensure he is eating enough hay.

Thanks for the response..so this is normal behaviour?
I'm just a bit concerned Especially since I lost a beloved piggy just 3 weeks ago.😪

Yes, mine seek out the seed heads first.
As I say, the lifelong routine weight checks are the only way to know a piggy is actually eating enough hay. Have you been weighing him?

I'm sorry for your loss.

I have not weighed him.

Your concern is understandable given your recent loss.
My boar, Micah, loves the seed heads and will happily eat them, leaving the stalks for his wives !

He continues to eagerly eat his pellets and pea flakes as well.

Is that a boar thing then ? Since the sows don't mind eating the stalks?

Make sure to weigh him. Weight checks should be done every week as part of lifelong routine care, and then switch to daily weight checks where there are health concerns. Hay is 80% of their daily food intake and if they don’t eat enough it quickly shows on the scales. Reduction in hay intake is often the first sign of an illness, sometimes when clinical signs have not yet been displayed.

Pellets are just one tablespoon per day (and only make 5% of the daily food intake) and pea flakes should be an occasional treat - neither of which form enough of the diet so still eating them is basically insignificant if hay intake has dropped. Its like you not eating any proper meals for days and only eating one chocolate bar a day.

No it’s not a boar thing.
