Hello.
I was wondering what everybody thinks about those supposedly Timothy hay loops and "sticks" that you can find online from China. I have seen some also give the hay balls to their piggies.
I have bought and given them to my piggies and it seems that they enjoy them a lot, in a very different enthusiastic way as they do with the actual timothy hay (which they also enjoy): what is the trick, do you think? I notice that the loops are particularly green, and I initially was afraid of there being an artificial addition to them, but then I read on this forum about the dried hay/grass, and it says that the color is green or dark green because of the fast drying process, and also that it retains the nutrients of fresh grass better because of that: could that be similar?

I tend to stick with sweet green hay cookies and forage for my boys. I get most of their treats from nature's own when I order hay. And they go mad for green oat hay too.
The hay loops are only hay, they do not have any fillers. As long as the hay is fine, they should be something that one can give frequently, as it is just hay woven into a shape. My piggies do not seem to like hay cookies as much as those hay loops, or some types of forage. We have never tried the green oat hay yet.

The two main considerations for commercial toys and treats are dietary and safety.

If there is any risk of a piggy get stuck in, caught or trapped in any way (also the consideration when items are chewed and start to come apart); or if it contains something they shouldn’t eat (including string or other ways to hang up some items), then don’t give it.

Those looks to be fine though (as long as they are sufficiently sized if a piggy tried to get through it!)

Thanks to everybody for their replies.
My piggies destroy those loops straightaway, so I have not seen them passing through them at all. I will check that the next time that I give them out.
The "sticks" of hay are just straight, so there is no issue there.
But it is the dietary aspect that I can not figure out: they are sold as timothy hay but they look very different from the timothy hay that we get, and also the pigs react very differently, though it may be the novelty effect of them.
