I'm having an argument with my hubby, I said we should get Timothy Hay, he says it's all the same and that Meadow Hay is cheaper. Which do you use and why? Please? ;)

Hiya,

I use Timothy Hay for their diet mainly because I get the one called herbage which has dandillion and marigold in which is great for digestion and the immune system. Also I may be wrong but I think the Timothy hay is a bit tougher for them and good for their teeth and gnawing.

I do give Meadow but as bedding, mine ear that too but Timothy is always available in the Hay racks.

There's nothing wrong at all with Meadow Hay- guineas don't 'need' Timothy if they have a decent Meadow Hay (all hay should be good quality). Timothy is just another variety as is Herbal and Alpine. Mine don't eat the herbal because (I think!) it smells too much.

At the moment I use mostly Meadow hay from a local farmer (they deliver, find them in the Yellow Pages under farm shops), Timothy and Rye (which my pigs don't particularly like but given the hay situation its all the farm had, some Alpine Hay (European Meadow Hay), and Golden Timothy which is Canadian. I do get donations of hay though (just finished some Orchard Grass) hence the variety.

The bottom line is to use good hay in my opinion no matter where its from.

All hay is good for teeth and has the long fibre needed for digestion :)

I just use basic meadow hay aslong as it's green, sells nice and they eat it :)

I am going to do what I did with the buns, buy a large bale of nice meadow hay, and a small bag of something yummy (timmy hay or the dandelion) and then mix them together, so they have the boring stuff then suddenly a yummy bit. Also the dried herbs and sunflowers on bunny basics keeps their interest

I use Timothy Hay, I order it from SPH supplies in big boxes so it lasts me a while, and it is lovely and green, but I also use meadow hay although they prefer the timothy hay but I don't think it matters aslong as it is good qaulity.

Well I just re-ordered the Meadow hay from The Hay Experts which is what we've been feeding them, but I've brought som Timothy hay too - we've decided they can decide! Thanks everyone.
