Has anyone found a Timothy hay that doesn't come chopped up?
I usually use a cheaper softer meadow hay to line their litter tray as they like to burrow under it and do their business on it (and then eat it, manky beggers), then Timothy hay in their hay bag for chomping, but it always seems to come chopped up.
I think what I'm looking for is a Timothy type quality (which doesn't break the bank), but in longer, softer strands so I don't need 2 types of hay. Does such a thing exist?
Ideally in easy to store quantities as a bale would be too large for me.
Thanks

Timothy hay is quite stalky so not suitable for bedding but if it’s just for feeding I love the hay from Timothy.Hay.co.uk.Its £22 for a 9kg bag so lasts for ages and it’s not in short strands like the cheap ones you can get at pet shops. Its lovely and green and long.

Would you say this is comparable to the Oxbow Timothy Hay? That looks lovely and green / long, but is so expensive - whereas the one you use seems a good price.

I’ve never actually used the oxbow one as it’s so expensive lol but the Timothy hay one I linked is usually excellent quality.A lot of forum members order from there x

I've used the oxbow one, my pigs actually prefer the Timothy Hay to anything else! I use soft meadow hay for the trays as well as its softer for the same reasons.

If you contact timothyhay.co.uk they'll actually send you a free sample, that's how I first tried it. Most pet food companies will always send a free sample if you email them and explain you'd LOVE to try their product but have fussy animals ;) I've had a lot of samples over the years :))

I now buy the £40 for 18kgs of Timothy hay now for my 5, let's hope it lasts through Christmas! :))

That's great, thanks for the tip Cavy Kung-Fu! I will definitely do that. I've found a lovely soft meadow hay that they all use for 'everything' too from Hay and Straw website. Get through loads of that!

I keep meaning to look for a new meadow hay and try that site, I wonder if they do samples! :P

Long strands of hay is good for grinding your piggies teeth down,I get the pets at home hay,I highly recommend it my pigs love it.

They do a sample of their 3 hays for £4.99 but they’re very small bags lol

Yeh, they are very small - I ordered 2 samples of all 3 hays that they do. The meadow hay is lovely and soft, but the Ings and Timothy/Rye hay is quite coarse and my girls aren't so keen on it. It is very long stranded though.

Had mooch around QD today and picked up some of their meadow hay, (the Extra Select loose unchopped) as it looked nice long green strands. I must say I was really impressed and it was only 99p per bag! Pigs seemed to really like it and the really long strands meant that they could really burrow into it. Think I will stock up on a few bags each time I go.

My sample of the Timothy hay arrived today and my girls definitely approved! So I've just ordered a 9kg bag of that - just hope they don't change their minds now
