Hello all,

I'm wondering if I could get some recommendations for Timothy hay?
I've already binned the bag I got from my local pet shop as it was very dusty and I'm currently using Excel feeding hay but I'm not sure how much is being eaten.
I'd like to find a good hay, that's not too expensive, that can be used as bedding and feed.

Thanks in advance

Hi! We may be able to help you better if you please added your country to your details since we have members from all over the world. Brand names vary quite a lot depending which country you are in as you can imagine.
Please click on your username on the top bar, go to account details and down to location. That makes it appear with every post you make and allows us to tailor any recommendations to what is available and relevant to where you are straight away. Thank you!

Hi, I would use meadow hay for bedding as it’s softer and then you can give more expensive Timothy Hay as feeding hay.
I order my meadow hay on line from natures own. I order Timothy and oat hay from VetUK online. I’m very happy with it so far.

Do you have a farm nearby? I get meadow hay from a farm that is a fiver for a huge farm bale. I bag it up at the farm so all the mess is in they hay barn and not at home. That way I can check the bale all the way through as well. My late Mum got the straw for the hens and ducks there for about 20 years. I have never had a bad bale from there. I use it for my piggies for eating and bedding and they love it. My Rainbow Piggies had it too and they lived for 5 years.

Soft meadow or orchard hay is best for bedding. Ings hay is also an option. Timothy hay is very stalky, so better fed in a hay rack in order to minimise the problem of eye pokes.

There are several online hay suppliers:
Hay and Straw
Dust Free Hay | Quality Hay & Straw Via Mail Order

I get my own meadow hay via a local independent pet shop from a local farmer that specialises in growing hay for horses, which need the second cut. The first cut is sold as small pets hay because that is much better for them than equine hay.

Thank you for adding your location.

Thank you for your replies everyone. I shall definitely look at "hay and straw" when my current supply runs out.
The don't seem to be overly keen on the Burgess excel, but it could be that they are still so nervous that they are not eating as much as they would normally.

I buy my hay on-line from Natures Own. So far it has always been very good.
