Does anyone know how high Timothy seed heads are in calcium please? Are they significantly higher than Timothy? I have pigs with bladder problems and one is squeaking a lot, she has sludge and I'm wondering if the amount of seed heads they have could cause a problem

Good question...I assumed Timothy was fine all around, never before heard of a difference between the hay and the seed heads. Out of my 4 pigs, all on the same low calcium diet, only 1 gets sludge/squeaks. What else do they eat? 🐷

I had read somewhere the seed heads had more calcium in but it depends how much more if it's an issue really.

Mine have orchard hay, coarse Timothy hay ( which is where a load of seed heads are coming from very good quality stuff).

They have piggie parcel pellets but I reckon they eat only a teaspoon each a day. But they also have a small amount of Harringtons pellets as I use them a treat for one of my piggies at medication time as she's on 3 meds twice a day.

Veg wise they eat round lettuce, green pepper, mini cucumber in the morning. Tea time they have romaine lettuce, red or yellow pepper and mini cucumber. Before bed they have cucumber and coriander. I give a lot of cucumber because I have a problem with lack of drinking and it reduces squeaks. What do you feed? Some people say too low calcium can be a problem. Everytime I've tried meadow hay though Nancy flares up.

My girls get timothy hay, 1 tablespoon of pellets scattered in the hay 2x a day, and then about 1/4 to 1/2 a mini cuke, 1/4 of a pepper, and a bunch of cilantro (coriander) every day. One vitamin C cookie (ocbow) Carrot, celery, apple once or twice a week as treats, and water is filtered. They say a big source of calcium can be tap water.

Mainly for low calcium I never give parsley or other dark greens.

My box of timothy has more or less seed heads depending on the cut, but it's never a huge percentage, more like a treat.

My Timothy hay is absolutely full of them. Could probably set up an Etsy page just selling seed heads 🤣.

So you don't feed lettuce?
Mine refuse to eat the oxbow cookies. Though not sure it was the vitamin C I tried them on, I tried two different ones with glucosamine in. I give cystease instead.

I've had one pig with problems since April. My other pig has developed bladder problems at the same time as uterus cancer which has been removed now. Vet thought the mass was pressing close to the bladder. But the sludge could be coincidence and I'm wondering what I'm doing wrong. But my pigs are sisters so maybe it's genetic 🤷. My other pig didn't have any sludge on x-ray- hormonal issues and IC I believe instead

I think the seed heads are higher in protein rather than calcium.

The most important thing for bladder piggies especially is to remove pellets from the diet my vets said so that could be something to look into?

I tried that for my Nancy and small amounts seem to be fine but large amounts not. Cancelling them out altogether didn't make a difference but less does. My worry is the lack of vitamin D without pellets as they are indoors pigs. And vitamin D is what helps them absorb the calcium.

If it helps reassure you, our vets (very piggy savvy) said that they recommend a hay and lettuce only diet to bladder pigs. It’s balanced without being too low or high in calcium. Small amounts of grass or other low calcium veggies can be given depending on the individual.

Perry is an indoor pig. He has meadow and timothy hays (vets recommend meadow hay from a bale and timothy hay alongside), lettuce twice a day with small amounts of cucumber, pepper (mostly green as the lowest sugar option) and every now and again a small amount of grass.

I don’t think the vitamin D is a problem to be honest. Hays that are more yellow/golden contain more vitamin D than the greener hays (more vitamin C) but I know you can’t know for sure how much.

The vitamins and minerals in pellets deteriorate very quickly.

I don’t know if that’s any help but just what I’ve been told for my own bladder piggy :)

Thank you. That's worth knowing. I've tried to get Nancy onto meadow hay numerous times and her squeaking gets worse but maybe it's a change in diet because of IC. She squeaked loads when I introduced coriander to begin with.

How long have you been feeding the diet for? Has it helped much?

He first started with his bladder last June and was moved onto this diet then alongside a two week course of anti-inflammatories. It’s kept things at bay until just recently when he’s flared again due to stress over his arthritis we think.

It was two other pigs of ours who improved lots on the diet but they still had flares for a long while to be honest and needed daily long term meds in the end. It’s a hard thing to manage as they react differently, vets opinions differ on the treatment etc.

Really hope you manage to get it under control for the majority of the time. It’s horrible to see and takes a long time to settle.

Which lettuces do you feed and how much please?

It makes me worry it's me. I've had so so many problems. One pig was health until recently. But I've been at the vets pretty much every week since April. I get the odd time when it maybe a few weeks. But then I've had some weeks when it's been 2/3 times in a week. But we've had all sorts as well like sarcomas, hernia, wound infection that reopened the stitches, hay poke etc 🤦 I've only got two pigs.

Have you had a lot of piggie health problems too?

Between the two of mine in 10 months lots of problems but also had 2 ultrasounds, 4 x-rays, 3 surgeries. And I've only got two pigs 🤦. Nancy needs to go for another surgery soon

Hi sadly our 5 month old guinea baby passed away 17th December he seemed fine then within 2 hours he was gone I'm still heartbroken and don't understand what happened. The others were then really unsettled and then a couple of weeks ago one of our others had a ruptured eye and we had to choose to operate or let him go he has come through the operation but pulled a stitch out and got an infection, so now battling with medicines every day and it's so sad as he has to be on his own now. I just wanted them to be happy and feel awful. So I understand, kind of x

I'm so sorry you lost your piggie and you have such a poorly one. How is the antibiotics going? My Pumpkin's wound reopened and got infected but has got massively better with wound flushes and antibiotics. Though unfortunately she's weeing in pain at the moment

Mainly sweet gem, romaine, sometimes cos. Those are the ones we can get easily although any are fine apart from iceberg really.

We’ve had phases like you as well. Just ongoing illness and vets, stress and worry. It’s hard at times definitely.

Quick post as I'm on lunch at work...aside from diet, have you ever tried glucosamine for the squeaks? It coats the bladder and can relieve some discomfort due to sludge. Many here use Feline Cystease capsules. I open the capsules and sprinkle the powder on cucumber. It's a safe dietary suppliment and really helps!

Yes. Nancy gets one a day. Pumpkin she was on it, stopped squeaking and had cancer surgery so I assumed she was better so had stopped. I've restarted her on it. Hoping it helps.

It's looking much better but yes I've noticed some squeaking when he has a wee. Thank you how is your baby?

Oh bless him. Squeaking when weeing seems a common thing. Well Pumpkin's wound is almost together now. Pumpkin has been squeaking a lot when weeing but I have noticed if I feed watery veg is temporarily stops so I'm planning on giving extra veg for a few days in hopes it helps.

Nancy same as usual really- she's on multiple meds. We are coping. Been in talks with the vets about her next surgery. First surgery that removed an ovary reduced her pain squeaking. I nearly got her put to sleep because it was really bad before she had an ovary out. Seems hormones were effecting her bladder.
