So, I've always been told that timothy hay is best so that is what I've been feeding my pigges. However, there is quite a lot of waste as the stalks are very short. The girls gobble it down, but Charlie hardly eats any of it. I'm worrried about him, so I was wondering about swapping to meadow hay.

Is this a good idea, or should they be on timothy?

I have always fed my piggies dust free meadow hay, i get a large bale from jolleys or the range for between £3-4 pounds and it last 2 - 3 months, its fairly soft but i've never had any problems with it.

Unfortunatly I don't think any of those stores near me. At the mo I'm paying about £3 a bag from p@h and they only last about a week :(

If anybody knows of any other places that sell big bales preferably online?

I use both, £2.20 for 1.5kg of Meadow Hay in Wilkinsons and £11.50 for 1.3kg Timothy Hay from Thistle Cavies, http://thistlecavies.tripod.com/shop/id2.html

The more expensive one less often, obviously in the current economic climate!

Hope this helps. It's always interesting to know where the best deals are

I use orchard grass because I am allergic to timothy an at first my pig wolfed it down because it smelled so sweet.drool

Meadow hay is fine as a general bedding and munching hay with the timothy hay as a treat.

Wilkinsons are good value for both if you are buying in small quantities, look for equine stores in your area for larger quantities of meadow hay (full bales around £5).

Online - I use Hay for Pets too, my lot like the ings hay.

I use HayForPets Meadow Hay everyday, and buy 'treat hays' from The Hay Experts - at the moment they have Oat, Wheat and Barley hay and it's going down a treat x)

I usually get a coarser, timothy 'style' hay as their treat hay as it helps to wear their teeth to have both soft and stalky hay to eat. They get 1 or 2 handfuls of treat hay per day

We found our hayfever was reduced by switching to Timothy Hay from Meadow. Perhaps ours are spoilt but they are on a Burgess diet of Herbage (Timothy Hay and herbs) and Excel nuggets plus daily fresh greens. They also have hay cakes which are meadow hay, but not lose so we can cope.

Our attitude is that its not the piggies fault we have hay fever so its up to us to adapt around what they need, as we decided to have them.

I usually stick with this

My guinea loves it and my rabbits are more then happy to eat it (I usually buy 2 at a time from the pet shop as they are 2 for £6 but 2 form there would be under £5). I also buy treat hays like the burgess marigold one and we currently still have some oat hay. Today I got some Burns meadow hay, really soft and nice and they seemed to love it :)

Nothing wrong with spicing it up with little bags of this and that
