Tiny little Dink

How bad do I feel? She was running about doing her mini wheek :(

I took Dolly out and fed her veggies on her own while Dink ran up to the bars to see me and was clearly wondering what was going on.

Roll on giving veg again

I know. It feels bad as she's only been really interested in the veg a few days and now it's stopped. BUT at least she will be better soon and thank goodness it's just a food issue.

Aww poor Dink, piggies have this great ability to make us feel guilty when it comes to food rations! :))

Like Cgilchrist said maybe a little bit/slice of something should be ok?

Dink still has diarrhea. Yesterday it seemed a bit better and she even popcorned for the first time. But today I have come down and it's back.

She seems well still, acting normally, looking for food.

She is drinking alot of water - I am guessing because she is losing water. Good girl.

Is there anything I can do? Peter Gurney recommends shepherds purse. Should I try her on a leaf if I can find some?

Or arrowroot - should I try that?

Thoughts?

Is the diarrhoea runny or just very soft poops?

Good she is otherwise ok. I'd be inclined to give probiotic, it won't help all types of diarrhoea but it can help some.

You can try the shepherds purse of arrowroot, it's up to you, won't hurt to try.

Awww, poor Dink! You must be so worried! Can human baby remedies be used for pigs, you think? I know in Sweden babies are fed blueberries or greenish (no brown spot as it does he oposite :) ) to firm stuff up...

Otherwise I'll just cross my fingers that she recovers soon. I'm hapy to hear she still acts normal. She's such a good pig drinking water like that!

It may be a good idea to give her some dioralyte (or equivalent). Athough this is only necessary if her poops are wet.

I have spoken to my vet who say she can wait until Monday probably. She's under 200g now after putting on so much weight!

I have ordered the Pro-Kolin and am off out to buy biolapis from my vet. I have an appointment for Monday morning for her at the vets.

I am going to start syringing her oxbow critical care today too.

It's mystifying as she seems so well in herself and is getting lots more water from the water bottle to supplement.

Laura first day it was runny, yesterday almost normal but soft, this morning runny again, not water but defo runny.

The vet's assistant said to feed her grass. Thoughts on that?

In fact the assistant said it can't be caused by veggies or grass although the vet did say it could be due to dietry changes. Talk about conflicting - although I agree with the vet!

Oh my! I can offer no advice for little Dink but just send my very best wishes. I hope she continues to gain weight and get big and strong xx

Okay I have had a thought - could be far fetched - what do you think?

Dinks diarrhea has started since Dolly went on Septrin. Could she be eating any of Dolly's poop and getting a second hand dose of septrin that is upsetting her system?

She LOVES Bio Lapis by the way - very much so. Not so the critical care.

So second hand septrin thoughts?

I may separate anyway to see if that helps.

By no means, am I qualified in any piggy related illness, I just wanted to say it is very possible Dinks is eating Dolly's poo's mine do it.

I hope the wee soul gets better soon fingers crossed. I would have thought grass could give her the runs but then again what do I know rolleyes.

Sending healing wheeks to Dolly and Dink :)!

She still has it :(

She's on her own right now since yesterday morning. I have given her a few blades of grass only and lots of hay.

I am very worried about her - you can feel all of her bones now. Her ribs and spine :(:(

I have the probiotic that treats diarrhea on order and a vets appointment tomorrow.

I still think it may be related to Dolly and her antibiotics. She's taking biolapis beautifully but I have to syringe her and I know syringing babies is a big worry - I am trying to be gentle but it's all starting to really get me down. She wont take critical care - I can't bring myself to force her either incase it goes on her lungs.

:(

Firstly can I say what a wonderful thing you are doing. It seems like you are doing absolutely everything for poor little Dink. :)

Can I ask where you got the metatone from and how much you are giving? (I'm hoping to try give my poorly piggy some). And also the Bio Lapis?

Let us know what the vets say. I have to force feed my piggy at the minute, it's horrible for both of us.
I dont know much about guineas, but I dont think things can go on their lungs? I was told that you can't choke them or anything with the food as they have a different kind of system inside. Yorkie (poorly piggy) hasn't choked yet with me and i have been forcing baby food down him.

Fingers crossed for Dink xx

has she had any gut stimulants from the vets?

she could have an injection then oral meds which are given 3 times a day.:)

these helped ralphie wonders and i swear by them...

You buy metatone at your local chemist on the shelf. I haven't given her any of this since she got diarrhea incase it aggravates it. Plus the bio lapis (you can buy it online from vet UK but I got mine from my vet who stocks it but it's cheaper online)

With babies it's easy to aspirate (I think that's the right word) where they inhale the food / drink rather than swallow it and it gets on their lungs causing more problems.

So I am using a syringe for the biolapis but making sure not to push it in her mouth so far and letting her take the liquid at her own pace.

Hope that helps you. It's hard isn't it?

What does the stimulant do? And she's less than 200g - would she even be able to have them?

Poor Dink, Lisa I really hope she gets better for you, your doing everything possible for the wee mite, how is she in herself?

Sending healing wheeks!

the stimulant kick starts the gut into working as runny poo and weight loss even if they are eating can indicate that her gut isnt working/very fast i would say she could have it but a lower dose..its called Metoclopramide syrup ralphie had 0.2mls three times a day so she would need a much lower dose but its worth a try x

she may not beable to have the injection of it but i cant see why she cant have the oral meds x

I'll ask the vet about it tomorrow. Thanks Claire

She's okay in herself I think. She's in the hay now and I have sectioned off some cage so she can now see Dolly but she's stayed in the hay since I moved her. But she was coming over to me this morning and up the bars wheeking for food. She took her bio lapis fine and is in the hay bed sleeping.

Aw Lisa your doing such a great job with Dink! I'm sorry she is still poorly.

I've also used Metachlopramide and found it to be very effective.

Only the vet I think. Going to ask tomorrow when I see the vet.

Can I ask... what is Metoclopramide used for and what does it do? Where can you get it from? x

Metoclopramide is a gut stimulant(helps get the gut working)after antibiotics, which can kill all the flora in the gut.. which then the gut can slow down or shut down and the guinea pig can die its very hard to get it working at the start but it does help at lot and a lot of guineas on it make a full recovery, its also used if a guinea pig has been unwell and hasn't eaten in a while it gives the gut a kick start and also increases the appetite and can also be used in guinea pigs with the runs, you can get this from a vets xx

Thank you, can you give this at the same time as baytril? or do you wait til after? x

Aww well by the sounds of it you are doing very well so far. Make sure to include some vitamin C rich foods like red capsicum and carrot in her diet too :)
Also, keep a close eye on her for signs of her cold coming back, things like crusty eyes, sniffles and a runny nose, just to be on the safe side.

The vet gave it via inection & at home I gave it after Baytril. Hamish would have his baytril followed by the metaclopramide but he wasn't eating & therefore not pooping & I didn't know it was given to pigs with diarrhoea too.

yeah it can be given to guineas with the runs as some illnesses which cause the runs are down to there gut slowing down x
