Hi everyone.

So I was told yesterday that someone had released a guinea pig at an apartment complex a little bit from my house. I went there earlier today to try to find them, and one of the workers and a tenant told me that there are 3-4 of them that have been living out near the dumpsters.
I’m not quite sure how long they’ve been out there, but I was wondering if anyone had any tips on catching them, or anything I could really do in this situation?

PS-I live in the US, and the closest guinea pig rescue to me is in another state.

It is really kind of you to want to try and help.

Maybe some cardboard boxes stuffed with hay in a sheltered location near the dumpsters?
I would also call the local Humane Society, as even if they are not a specialised rescue they will still be able to help, they just may not be able to keep the guinea pigs once they are caught (but will arrange for them to be transferred to a more appropriate rescue).

I can definitely try the boxes! For today, I just scattered some hay, pellet food and treats around the area that the tenant said he had seen them, but I can get some boxes set up tomorrow. And I’ll try to get in contact with the humane society to explain what’s going on. Thank you! : D

I have no other advice, but all the best! I hope you catch them.

…… and then post pictures 😁….

Good luck. I hope you manage to catch them.

@superka found and caught a piggy. Hopefully if he sees this he can offer advice.

Good luck

@Bill & Ted caught some released piggies in Cornwall and may have some tips . I can't find her thread perhaps if she sees this she can link it.

Thank you, someone else linked the thread! I like the idea with the net, but I can’t set out traps, because the folks that live in that complex have cats that wander around and I don’t want to catch one of them.

Ah that’s great that you can set up a shelter box - here’s hoping you can catch them 🥰
You are an inspiration trying to catch these little piggies

ok guys, I saw him again today! He’s nibbling on some hay I set out, and he ate all of the lettuce I set out yesterday. Unfortunately, I think I found the people who released him, and his previous living arrangement.

Oh that’s brilliant news. Well done. Was there just one piggy? I’m so pleased he’s safe now.

Omg well done ! 🥰 So glad you’ve got him - any sign of the other two ?

I’ve only seen him, but I’m leaving the shelter box out there with some food, and I’m going to run by a few more times to see if there are any others. The ladies in the office building said they would keep an eye out as well, and they’ll call me if they see any more out there.

I haven’t seen any others, but i’m leaving the shelter box out there with some food, and I’m gonna go by a few more times to see if there are anymore out there. The ladies who work in the office said they would keep an eye out as well, and they’ll give me a call if they see anymore.

Well done. He is one very lucky piggy (assuming he is male).
And no matter where he ends up now he will be so much better off than living in a fish tank.

Honestly, he looks surprisingly ok? I’m gonna take him to the vet to get checked out of course, but after just doing a basic health check he looks pretty good. Oh and I checked, he is a little boy.
Will you be keeping him or looking out for a new home for him?

I’ll post a pic of him in his new setup later, but yea, definitely better than living in a fish tank. This is him rn tho.
