Hi everyone

Does anyone have any helpful hints/tips/pitfalls to bathing piggies? I've just received my Gorgeous Guineas shampoo and I'm hoping to have a piggy pamper session one evening this week.

Any help greatly appreciated from you wonderful people xoxo

I recommend putting a hand towel in the bath/whatever your bathing them in so they have something to grip to and don't fall if they panic and try to make a run for it.

Try not to make the water too deep at first, make it quite shallow so their feet can get used to it and then gradually fill the bath up. That's what I did when I first bathed my guinea pig and now he loves bathtime :)) x

Thanks Shelley. I was thinking of using a washing up bowl, would that be ok? Don't know why, but I feel really nervous about it! I'm sure Miss Marple will make it quite clear in no uncertain terms how she feels about the whole thing! Wheeeeeeeek! rolleyes

Thank you! I think I know who will get the wettest and I don't think it will be the girls :))

I'd imagine that would be fine! I ended up using the bottom half of their pet carrier lol. I was really nervous as well but it all went fine (minus Gilbert jumping onto my lap soaking wet!). Neither my boys liked it but they weren't squeaking or anything so it wasn't as stressful for them as I thought. Although CheesyPuff didn't speak to me for a few hours afterwards.

what i do is put the piggy in a handbasin with a towel in it, in the bath, i put some water in the bath too so they can have a little swim if they want too. i also make sure i have the at least one other piggie in a safe place in the room, the first time i bathed my youngest pig it calmed him to know he wasn't alone.... and LOTS N LOTS of towels hehe

I x) the name Cheesypuff, that's wicked! :))

I'm aiming for Wednesday night when they have their clean out so I'll report in from where I'll be in the doghouse on Thursday :))

Thanks for the top tips Triv ;)

We have a thread with bathing tips in our reference section; it's worth having a look in there!

Oh cool thanks, I did have a quick look before asking but didn't spot anything, probably because I was looking in the wrong place rolleyes I'll take another look, ta ;)

I use a large washing up bowl with a small towel at the bottom to stop the piggies from slipping. About 3-4 inches of water but support their front ends, lather up on my lap wrapped in a warm microfibre towel then fresh water to rinse. They are dried off carefully with a hairdryer as they are very long haired - don't seem too phased by bath time, I'm the one in pieces :(|)
My daughter helps me as an extra pair of hands is a god send but will escalate into the bathroom when I'm more confident to rinse off carefully with the shower :...
All worth it seeing them fluffy and gleaming - such a joy to see them rolling in the hay and sitting on poops within half an hour :{

The first time I washed My Gaga I did it in the kitchen sink with a flannel on the bottom. And I had help from my stepdaughter. What chaos.lol. Bites fidgeting ect ect. This time I did it in the bath. With no help. Make sure you have something on the bottom of the bath for the pigglies to grip, as they do make a run for it. Also have a spare towel ready for when you take them out so you can wrap them up, I found Gaga likes to be cuddled while I'm drying her, as its a rather stressful time for them. This time she enjoyed it though. Especially the blowdry afterwards(ON WARM NOT COLD) Id also advise putting an apron on yourself as well, Cos you get soaked. Its sooo funny though.

ive never bathed my pig, he is short haired and keeps very clean. Is it done for hygeine? fun? swimming session?

how often do you bath?

I'm finding reading these threads so much help!

I did this last week for the first time with my four girlies. Have to say I was dreading it but actually it was ok. Made sure Ihad everything I needed before beginning. I did it in the kitchen sink and had towels either side folded so they were nice and thick. I wore an apron! a must! I ran some warm water in the sink then put them down into it. I then picked them up and once checking the temp of the running water from the mixer tap I held them under to wet them all over obviously not their heads. I then put them back down in the water and shampooed them. I then took them out and sat them on the soft towel by sink and dried them with another towel. I then took them over to the kitchen table and sat them on another folded towell and blow dried them gently and with warm air constantly moving the drier. I then took them and put them into my indoor cage with fleece to leave them to make sure although they felt dry that they were dry. We then got some lovely sunshine and it was warmer out in the sun then indoors so i took them out and put them in their runs. They were all done separately and all seemed ok. Make sure it is quiet and you will get no disturbances. good luck
