Hello, just wondering if anyone has any tips for effectively flushing an abscess site on the chin?

Vet has been seen and all appropriate action taken, this is the latest development in a long series of mouth/dental related visits. From x-rays it looks as though there is potential the abscess was connected to the inscisor or first molar but very tentative so treating as standard for now and doing a watch and wait.

The site is stitched open with dissolvable stitches and I’m doing warm compresses and my best to try rinse with hibiscrub but it’s in such an awkward spot to get to without plonking his body fully in water! Anyone got a secret method they’d be willing to share? Otherwise I’ll be setting my alarm half an hour early for morning bath time

TIA!

@Tbag A 1ml syringe filled with the hibsicrub mixed with water is good to use. You can get it in the hole and flush it out. Also, don't let it scab over, you need to keep taking the scab off to flush inside.

When I've done it I've been expecting to get water everywhere (which I usually do) but standing them on a towel helps.

Did not think of directly syringe flushing with hibi! That’s genius, thank you :)

When I had to treat a wriggling piggy the vet told me to wrap her in a towel so she couldn’t move so much.
I’ve used the syringe method for flushing with Hibiscrub too.
I also use cotton buds for cleaning an abscess

Unfortunately since it’s under his jaw he can still move around even if he’s wrapped! I’ve used cotton buds for other abscess sites but since this spot is so hard to get to I don’t want to accidentally jab him in the throat if he moves suddenly. He is all in all a very good patient though so perhaps I’ll give it a try after syringe flushing. At least that way I’ll have a sense of how obliging he feels first!

I always used a syringe in saline or an antiseptic given by the vet to basically gently irrigate directly into the wound and clean it that way. Good luck!

Do you have someone else that can hold your guinea pig while you flush the abscess? I usually hold my piggy and hubby does the flushing. Underneath the piggy is a washing up bowl so the liquid runs to it. The piggy will get wet unfortunately coz the abscess is located in the chin (my piggy Prince had a similar problem a few weeks ago) but nothing that can't be dry by a towel.

Getting a good system down for cleaning and flushing, and he’s been good enough to let me swab out with a cotton bud too. Getting little bits of residual pieces out but nothing major, and it’s smelling normal now so hopefully we’re doing enough. Its a little hard still but no amount of massaging or flushing is producing anything so I’m hoping it’s not reforming deeper down.
