Hello, I am a new guinea pig owner. Myself and my partner are adopting 2 female guinea pigs in a few days time. I was just wondering if anyone has any tips on how to make adopted guinea pigs feel at home? Their current owner says they are used to handling but I imagine they'll be a bit scared at first while they settle into their new surroundings. No health issues according to the owner and they come with their cage and accessories. Any tips would be much appreciated, thanks!

Hi and welcome

You will find our new owners guide collection very helpful. it has got a whole section devoted to settling in new guinea pigs and making friends with them as well as information on understanding behaviours.
Getting Started - New Owners' Most Helpful Guides

If you are rehoming privately and not from a rescue with a mandatory quarantine and vet care, I would still strongly recommend to follow the tips in this guide here. An worryingly high number owners can be extremely economic with the truth when it comes to getting rid of their pets or be accidental owners of wrongly sexed piggies. Knowing what to look out for never goes amiss!
What to check and look out for in new guinea pigs (vet checks, sexing, parasites&illness)

I recently acquired 2 girls from an owner who was moving to a place with a no pets policy.
I arranged a vet check for them the first week. My vet doesn’t charge for the registration check which was nice.
Give them time to settle, talk to them so they become accustomed to your voice.
You need to get to know their personalities too and allow them to ‘tell’ you what they like and don’t like.
With time and patience they will settle and fill your lives with love, fun and mess.

Read the information threads - they are very helpful.
Please let us see pictures when they arrive and settle in

Hello and welcome to the forum! Can't wait to see pics of your new ladies. Give them plenty of time to settle and remember food is the key to a piggies heart (they think with their stomachs not brains!) :D
