I am a final year student at the University of Plymouth, undertaking the BSc(Hons) Animal Behaviour and Welfare course. I am carrying out research in the form of a questionnaire on guinea pig nutrition. This research will go towards my university dissertation.

The purpose of this questionnaire is to gather information from Guinea pig owners of their pets living situation, diet and information provided on the packaging of their food. I am asking that you please participate by filling out this questionnaire, which should take no longer than 15 minutes to complete. It would be beneficial to have the food packaging information on hand.

Each questionnaire submitted will be done so anonymously and each person will be asked to provide a unique code which must be made a note of.

You will have the opportunity to withdraw your answers at any time during the study as long as you can provide your unique code in order to identify your submitted questionnaire. Withdrawal of your submitted questionnaire can be done so with no questions asked, at any time up until the study is completed. After the study is completed participants must be aware that their answers will be used in the write up of the study.

The submitted questionnaires will be stored securely on a private password protected computer.

All persons taking part in the questionnaire must be aged eighteen or older.

By opening the questionnaire you are showing that you have understood and agree to the following statements:
  • I have read the information and understand what the questionnaire entails.
  • I understand that my participation is voluntary and that I am free to withdraw at any time without giving any reason.
  • I confirm that I am aged eighteen years or older.
  • I understand that the results of this questionnaire will be used as part of a dissertation study and that my identity will be kept confidential at all times.
  • I give my informed consent to participate in this study.
You can contact me with any questions you may have prior to carrying out the questionnaire. If you wish to withdraw your submitted questionnaire or if you wish to gain access to my results after my dissertation is complete please do not hesitate to contact me.

I hope that you can get enough people to sign up for your study! Best of luck!

I will complete it for you :) Welcome to the forum, do you own piggies yourself?

I thought that too Bekki as I couldn't select both hay and veg.

Hello, Thankyou all for carrying out my survey. I was afraid of this when I read the responses and only one option was chosen for supplementing their diet. I have now figured out how to edit my survey even though it has been activated. Hopefully participants can now choose multiple choices =) I don't currently own any guinea pigs as I live in a small flat, however I have had guinea pigs throughout my life and the one in my picture was my last guinea pig called Anoushka. I currently have two adorable Russian Dwarf hamsters which I have always wanted to have as pets, but growing up we had cats so it wouldn't have been very fair to keep hamsters in the same house. :)

I put my option for that as "other" OP and I'm the one with 2 piggies inside and mentions harringtons food :-) i meant hay & veggies by that x

I would take part but I don't have the food packaging as I decant it and throw the packet away! Would that make it pointless to participate without that info?

Completed this for you. It would be interesting to hear back from you about the results when you come to write this up.

Thankyou bekki I will make a note to include this in your questionnaire =) Thats okay Nicola, the questionnaire is mainly to find out what the most common guinea pig food is that people buy so I can test the most common ones for their nutritional content. Just fill in the questions with the answer yes then in the comment box for the 2 questions about packaging information say that you don't have the packaging so are not sure and ill look it up myself and amend your answers if necessary =) Hannah86 I will make a note to send you a copy of my dissertation when it is complete if you like =)

i did it through a link on FaceBook. Must admit I hadn't read the packaging on my piggy pellets in years and was surprised that it didn't say what I assumed it did. Thank goodness I followed the vet's advice on feeding etc rather than relying on the bag of pellets so I've been doing it right for years. However, if I'd stuck to the info on the bags my piggies would not have had the right proportions of food for years.

I'm having a slight problem with the pellets question..

I answered other and said I don't feed any and now it is asking if its complete or complementary food but as I listed, I don't feed it so I don't know what to do as it won't let me skip the question.

I will amend this now so you can complete the questionnaire without having to answer the following question =)

It hasn't changed for me but I will do it as complementary for now and you should know its mine as I state I don't feed pellets. =) Just remember that I lied for that answer.

EDIT: I'm struggling with answering a few of these questions. The size of the bag. I don't think I can reply on either as I am talking about hay not pellets...?

Done! But I think you don't know the food I am talking about because me and my piggies are from Holland so here there are other brands of food.

Oh you might have had to re-start the questionnaire, okay i can change these answers to other and allow a text entry for you. You will probably have to re-start the survey, if you can't figure out how to do this then i could delete your incomplete survey and then it will probably work for you to start a new one =)

What's the difference between complete and complementery? I'm guessing complementery means complementery to other foods such as veggies? :/

Yes complementary means that it is a food to be fed along side other foods, complete means that there is no need for any additional supplements to the diet; that it contains all the nutrients that the animals requires. =)

Ok, thanks! I've said complementery because I use it in that way and am presuming it's supposed to be! But hopefully you'll be able to tell if I'm wrong! (I'm the dimwit who's said they've never read the packaging!)

Thats okay I can look it up if I need to make sure =) I don't think many people do, I never did properly until now. I've only just realised that most guinea pig foods say they are complementary, I used to always presume that they were complete. Its only from doing my course and choosing this particular topic to carry out my dissertation on that I have become aware of packaging information and required nutrients and the importance of feeding a complete diet. =)

I just followed the advice on the forum rather than the packet - hence why I never bothered reading it! I am intrigued now though so will be reading it the next time I get a new bag!

That'd be great if you could. I've tried to fill it out but gave up in the end as I couldn't do a lot of answers despite trying. xD; I tried to restart but it wouldn't let me.

I have delete your response, so you should be able to restart and be able to answer the questions that apply to you and skip the ones that don't =)
