if we were not home she would have DIED...
please please remove the hayracks asap..i would hate anyone to go through the same thing and lose their piggie
kellie

A member on here found her piggy with her head stuck in a wicker ball too :(
I use hay trays and plastic veg racks for my piggies as I'm a born worrier :...

what sort of hay rack was it? i use a bent C&C grid for my hay.

glad she is ok x

Aww how frightening that's terrible I don't use them anyway not a fan. just have a hay box and a bowl full of readigrass .

Poor pigger, so glad she is ok x

I've got two internal hay racks that are V shape and hang on the bars. They'd be far too narrow for a guinea pig head to go through. I didn't like them though so took them off. Then I got the Ferplast ones that are solid plastic and go on the outside but to be honest I don't really like hay racks and don't have any on at the moment. They sound great but I don't think I'd like to have to get my dinner through the bars of my cage!

Good god, thank goodness you were in, poor little thing. Thank goodness she is ok now. Thanks for letting us know. As others have said please could you let us know which hay rack it was. It was little Mabel that got her head stuck in the wicker ball, it was horrible :0

I recall this sooo well :...and threw the one we had in the bin immediately. We didn't know better at the time as we had only just had the piggies but it was invaluable to know these 'toys' are not always safe :( :(

Same here really! They loved playing and nibbling it, but once the hole got big enough sure enough she stuck her head in it and that was that! She was literally throwing herself around the cage to try and get it off and making a horrible noise that i'd never heard her make even to this day I haven't heard it again. I was literally about to leave the house too, thank god she got it stuck then rather than when I had left! Poor little mite! :...

Oh my goodness that's really worrying, I hope your girl is ok, would have been horrible for her:(. I don't use hayracks but do have some stashed away so might think twice before using them.

Maybe we could have a 'sticky' thread highlighting these hidden dangers :...
Members could post their views on accessories which would be particularly useful to all owners especially new ones ?/
For certain and probably alongside every other member on here, I would want to know or be aware of any experiences people have had of suitability/unsuitability of things for our furry friends particularly with the festive season approaching and Santa loading his sledge (was going to put Santa sacks but decided not to :x ;))

:)):)):)):))

I think that's a great idea! Will you PM a mod?

Same here, I don't use hay racks after Lola got her head caught, luckily I was in the room the moment it happened and freed her immediately.

I don't think that everyone should rush to remove their hay racks, but I do think that it's another one of those things to remind us to make sure that our piggy paraphenalia are safe, and that we use suitable things with our pigs.

How is she doing now?

I once heard a story about a baby who got stuck, unfortunately they didn't make it because of this I removed all my hay racks - they have trays now much safer and I do think foraging is healthier for pig's anyway as that's what they would do in the wild.

Very glad your pig is ok. xx

thanks for the replies.... shes eaten her tea:)....i dont know what make it is but it has black bars that go vertically...iwill see if i can find out the make and will certainly email the manufacturer.....

That one ?
They surely must perform safe standard practise upon production ? I would certainly email or contact the manufacturer still to let them know - could have been fatal :(

I have three of these in the hutch, all at a fairly high level and since march this year with no problems (so far). I cannot put hay in a box for them to forage through due to my allergies but I have enough experience with animals getting into pickles with hay racks to lessen the risks as much as possible.

Perhaps because I have had to remove animals from pickles I was aware of prevention, but it is a risk that needs to be highlighted.

I would also hope that products sold should and are fit for purpose (including safety). If it was a design flaw then the company needs to know that it is not fit for purpose as do the companies selling the items to the public.

I won't use hayracks for this reason, they can trap little heads/bodies!

I use 2 of these just to give them something to do inbetween pooping & eating :

The holes are really small. I also have a litter corner tray filled with hay & their hayrack is a tissue box (minus tissues rolleyes) stuffed with clean hay twice a day, they never actually manage to finish it all :)

That's a great idea, think I'll get some and perhaps cable tie them to the side of the cage...thanks Poppy'sMum! :)

I have hay trays but also like to keep a little hay up higher where it can stay fresher and pee-free....although the piggies do tend to prefer eating the hay they've trampled on (and whatever else!)

I used to have these folding hayracks but was petrified about the hinges failing and piggy heads/noses getting squashed or even worse so I stopped using them. Also don't like the pokey bit sticking out the side.

It's definitely a good idea to think through all the possible scenarios when buying new piggy kit. Also important to keep checking it over regularly in case it becomes unsafe over time.

Pigsforever, I'm glad that your piggy is fine x

yep...that very onegrrrr

I'm glad your piggie was okay, what a frightning thing to happen:(

I have this hay rack and the bars are very narrow and there is not many of them so it is quite safe. The bars on the trixie one look quite wide?
