Hi so had had my baby piggies nearly 3 weeks now and the white hairy sheep looking one I think needs a bath as the back end is slightly yellow . He was like it when I got him but I thought it was best to let him settle a little . Do you think it would be ok to bath him now ?

well, if you think they are use to you and has got use to there cage and stuff then keep them in a warm room E.G. bathroom heated up x
but if they are outside then wait till its nice and warm x If they are long haired piggies then it depends if they are use to the cage and you x if they are short piggies then just get some wipes that are for piggies and just wipe where the urine is or get some dry shampoo for piggies and scrub it in the place x because they are younge just make sure there use to the cage x
sorry if i spelt something wrong I'm having a off day x
xhugs to you and your piggiesx

I think they are used to me and seem happy enough in their cage . I think scruffy sheep needs a little haircut too . Just don't want to do too much to soon .

okie i will just get a wipe and try to wipe where the its dirty then let them get abit more settled in and get more use to the noises around them x then after a few more weeks do it c:
xhugs to you and your cute pig:hug:giesx

Hi,

For long haired piggies it is always important to keep the hair trimmed especially around the back end. Otherwise it will get stained but worse than that is it could be wet and they will be sitting in it.

They sound settled in now and so you can give the haircut a try first. I place everything out on my dining table that I need. Scissors, brush, a comb with a puppy pad and some veggies (to keep them busy lol).

I suggest you have someone there to help you as well especially until you know whether your piggy will sit still or not. One of mine loves getting his hair cut and pampered and will sit still for hours but he is an exception rather than the rule lol.

Start at the back end as this is this most important area in case you run out of time if he starts to fidget. Brush the hair to take any knots out. Then I comb out a section of hair away from the body and cut the hair along the comb. Continue to do this all the way around until the hair is short enough and then tidy up any bits that are missed. Remember practice makes perfect and your piggy does not know if they have had a bowl cut or not. They just need to be clean.

I would never use dry shampoo on a piggy as this would mean chemicals left on the skin. I have not even heard of ones made for piggies. Remember you should only use products made to use on piggies or that other experienced members have used and can guarantee they are safe to use.

I would suggest you try the haircut and see how your piggy goes with that before attempting a bum bath. If he is a boar then this will need more done and possibly more often if he is prone to having a very greasy grease gland. One you become experienced though and get into a routine it becomes second nature.

Let us know how you get on and then we can explain the good old bum bath routine lol xx

:D I agree with SqueakyDreams. Don't give your new piggie a full bath just yet.
Just use wipes or a flannel to clean up her bottom. Piggies should have a full bath only about once every 3 months, no more often than that unless for medical reasons.

Can I just add I have never had to give any of my 8 piggies a full bath.

The boars only ever need a bum bath when needed. Some less than others.

The only sow I have given a bum bath too is my long haired one for the same reason.

Piggies are naturally clean animals and if kept in a clean environment should not really need a bath.

Thanks for the great advice , yes its a little boy so he will be needing a bum bath from what I have read :) . I will do the haircut and then go from there . Thanks again xx

Please be aware that the yellow stains are very hard to near impossible to get out. We generally recommend to bum bath with hand warm water rather than a full bath, especially with boars and young and skittish guinea pigs. Don't do it anywhere they can freak out and jump blindly, like a sink or bathroom wash basin. Use a bathtub with a towel for grip or a basin placed in a shower instead so they can't hurt themselves. but also can't run far.

:D My late Suzie (avatar) had a yellow stain on her white bottom for a long time. It would not wash out. And then, after I changed her bedding to Carefresh, I found that the stain had gone! ?

I have found it I use anything other then fleece in the floor of the cage he ends up with it all tangled in his hair. He's had a little butt hair cut and a flannel bum wash much to his disgust.
