Hi,
I need advice. My gorgeous boar lost his friend and is a bit lonely. I have contacted a lot of rescue centres but what is the best way forward? Neuter and hope I can find a girl or girls to put him with or not neuter and try a boy pairing. One of my issues is that there are no local rescue centres and leaving my piggy for a week up to two hours away ,which was quoted, seems daunting. I would do it but I need help as this is all new to me.
Thanks in advance.
Best wishes,
Kate

A lot will depend on both your piggy and your vet.
In a healthy boar with an experienced vet neutering can be a good choice, and give a lot more options when it comes to pairings.
If he is paired with one or more females this also keeps your options open in the future with regards to a mixed or single sex group.
Key is a good and experienced guinea pig vet to do the operation.

But if you can find a rescue who will date him with other boars you could always try this route first and see what happens.

Whatever you decide, it is wonderful you are thinking about getting him a new friend.

So sorry for your loss. If you neuter you boy you will have better options for him when it comes to finding him a friend. Remember it takes 6 weeks after a neutering operation for a boar to become infertile. A lot depends on how experienced your vet is and also how your boar is coping on his own.

I’ve been thinking about your dilemma. It made me wonder what I would do in your position, when one of my boars passes over the bridge. And I can truly say I don’t think I could neuter them. I only want to put them through an operation if it was going to save their lives or if the other option is they would die. I’m very risk adverse. I am a “what if” person. Just wanted to throw that in the mix. Whatever you decide it’s done with the piggies best interest at the heart of it. ❤️

Weepweeps, I am like it too but I really can’t leave him alone anymore. He was also very poorly when the other one died so he wasn’t well enough to have a friend. Then we have had two more issues since😭 he is now fit and healthy so time to do it. An operation is scary

I have a neutered boar (neutered at the rescue before I adopted him) living with 3 sows and it's lovely seeing him so happy with his wives. If you do decide to go ahead with neutering, make sure you find an experienced vet and it should be plain sailing. On the other hand, he may like a baby boar as a friend and a rescue will be able to help you. Good luck with whatever you decide

He is starting to get lonely and I am not sure my vet is experienced enough. Now a rescue centre say my cage is too small. I was naive so I have that to sort too x

Dont worry, many of us start off a bit naive with a too small pet shop cage, the important thing is that you are here and asking us things that will benefit your piggy :)
I see you are in the UK so have you checked out our vet locator guide pinned at the top of the "Health and Illness" forum section to see if there is a recommended vet close to you who may be able to neuter your piggy, if thats what you decide? Neutering is usually very safe with an experienced vet, and will give more options for who piggy might live with :)

It’s lovely to have you here on the forum.
We have all started somewhere and I still cringe at the way too small cage my piggies were in.
C&C is a good solution as per your other thread.

I have a neutered husboar living with 2 sows. There is always a risk with any surgery but with an experienced vet there are rarely problems.

You sound as if you are a very thoughtful and caring owner so any future piggies will be guaranteed a wonderful home.
