So Toby and Barney are going for their first health check tomorrow - I am really hoping that the vet does not find anything exciting!

They had their grease glands washed at the weekend to make them pretty boys for their examination. Toby has decided to thwart my attempts to make them all presentable by doing something weird with a slice of red pepper. I have no idea what he has done but he now has an orange smile extending each side of his mouth and a big stripe running from his chin right down his chest. As the stripe looks the exact shape of a piece of pepper all I can conclude is that he has had a sleep on top of it - I cant work out how the stain would be that shape otherwise. Now I have to decide whether to take him to the vets with a stain or chuck him in the bath again tonight.

Honestly! Pigs! Who'd 'av 'them!:mal:

I'd give the vet a laugh.

Hope it all goes well.

:)) i always try and make them presentable for the vets, and maisie always wee's on the table and usually some on the vet aswell for good measure. :)):)):))

I hate to think how Barney will react given that he hates being handled. He might have to go first before he gets used to the surroundings!

I would actually love to see them in that state just for a laugh but they don't like tomato!

I once put a whole normal sized tomato in the cage to see what would happen, and reggie bit into it, picked the WHOLE thing up and ran off with it! He could hardly run it was so big! I confiscated it pretty quick once I caught him :))

Woke up this morning and it is cold, wet and foggy. I am going to feel so bad taking the boys to the vets in this. At least I have a heatpad that I can put in there. Sorry babies :soz:

They will be fine :) I hope you are OK, don't worry about them too much. I have never taken guinea pigs for an annual health check (The dog and horse get them every 6 months) but last year I took the rabbit for a check up and started to feel guilty that I had never taken the pigs......

I know @Goth Mummy, it wasn't something I would ever have thought of doing but from reading on here that others do, and learning of all the complications that can happen with piggies, I thought I ought to take them....just in case...

Oh GOD! I feel so awful! Don't worry both boys are fit and healthy.

Barney is hiding behind the sofa and Toby is under the chair. Neither of them will come out which you might think is fair enough but...... neither of them will eat their carrot! If you knew Barney in particular, you would realise how traumatised he must be feeling. I think they are hating their mummy right now.

I feel a bit stupid anyway - I forgot to ask about their nails - Toby has some black ones that concern MrS as he thinks I should be cutting them shorter (I told him to do it himself in that case). And she said Toby had some extra keratin (I think) on the bottom of one foot. The vet said she would trim it before I went but as she then moved on to look at Barney we both forgot about it until I was half way home. She said it wasn't causing any problems but if it got any bigger it might be a bit uncomfortable.

She also said that if the stress of the examination was too great then the benefits of an annual health check were not worth it. Judging by the way the boys look at the moment I feel they may not be going back again unless they are actually poorly.

Phew - they have both had a baby carrot now. They have had a move around so Barney is under the chair, had to laugh as I had left the pet carrier on the floor and Toby has got back into it - he had his carrot in there and is now having a rest - does he not realise that bad things happen when he goes in there, maybe he wants to go back to the vets!?!

Maybe carrot beats any bad feeling? haha x

Aw try not to worry, they will soon come round again. I take mine to the vet (well she is a vet but a family friend who treats my piggies as much as she can from her home) they go every 3 months for nail trims, cleaning of certain parts including ears, and a general check over, teeth trimmed and calcium stones removed if necessary. (only on the girls as its much harder with boars) And mine are usually fine, they get spoilt by Aunty Jan whilst they are there :)) xx

It is great they are healthy. What a relief for you. They will soon be back to normal so please do not feel guilty.

I'm taking my boys to the vets sometime this month as I've had them a year and jut want them checked. Also my cats going. But not at the same time...could you imagen that:lol!:

I want to take all of mine in for an annual health check - nails, weight, ears, mouths, hair etc
I spoke with one of the nurses and she said the Nurses will be able to do the health checks just not diagnose anything. It's either… £11 per pig for the nurse or £25 per pig with the vet … Decisions huh

Well they clambered all over me for their dinner so i think I have been forgiven!

@Jess - it cost me £22 altogether for both of them with the vet
